joskus
Okay - I've got a new Asus P5LD2-VM R2.0 (supports Core 2 now!) that works great with my old trusty 10.4.5 install. I just bought a new 250gb SATA drive (which, incidentally, is identical to my boot drive right now) on which I want to install 10.4.7. I don't want to upgrade - I want a fresh install on this machine. So I've gone through the basic installation (turned off audio in bios when installing), selecting the pertinant options in the installer. Install goes fine and it even boots off the drive into my new 10.4.7 install. Then when I reboot - it doesn't work. Strange. I've gone through my bios and set the primary boot drive as that new SATA drive (triple checked that one) and just can't figure out why it will not boot - I just get a black screen with a "_" blinking white cursor at the top left. Any ideas? As I said - perfectly smooth sailing up until then. Thanks in advance! joskus
Oh - naive me. Looks like it was a problem with making my partition active. Terminal's fdisk solved that. Works like a charm now - much faster than 10.4.5. joskus
Guess I spoke too soon...? I was able to reboot - somehow - after setting my new install disk as active (via fdisk in terminal)... but now if I reboot I get the same blinking cursor. Not sure what is going on here. Any input would be helpful. Installing 10.4.5 was pretty straightforward. I do have several disks (4 to be exact, all 250gb), so I'm making sure that the proper disk is set as the primary in my bios. Possibly related - my System prefs crashes when I try to set a startup disk there... ? Luckily I can still boot my 10.4.5 install fine, as I'm typing from that right now. (and no RAID option on this board, from what I can tell) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30480-asus-p5ld2-vm-r20-doesnt-boot-jas-1047/#findComment-211607 Share on other sites

joskus
I'll try that then. My install of 10.4.7 works great now - with the exception of booting. The only way I am able to boot is if I have my JaS 10.4.7 disc in my drive and that's selected as the primary drive. If I don't touch anything (hit a key to install os X, etc.) then it boots from my hard drive. Some boot loader problem? hiroo
ok, i'm not sure if this will help you but I have the same MB with a core2duo cpu and 2gb ram. there are two hd drives in the system, 120GB PATA is master on the primary ide port (has Win XP installed) and the dvdrw as slave on that bus. a 500GB SATA drive is on the MB SATA port, partitioned as 160GB+320GB. Both have os x installed and i am able to boot from either partition. the second partition is the bootable backup while i screw with the os on the first partition. by holding down F8 during boot process (after it says scanning IDE), the bios will pop up a menu of drives available to boot from and will list the floppy, dvd, 120GB, and 500 gb drives (and the flash card reader ports). if I choose the 500GB sata, it will start booting from there and if I immediately press F8 again, the OS X boot loader will show a menu of the two partitions and let me choose which to boot from. when i first installed 10.4.6 JaS on the 160GB partition, i had to use terminal to set it to be an active partition before it would boot. I later cloned that to the second 320gb partition and that became bootable as well.
