cyclejim
I have 10.4.6 running fine with a Geforce 6600GT but without CE or Quartz support. I read a bit thru the Apple website and it seems the 6600GT will not support these features so I am thinking of getting a X1600 card to get these features. While I have read thru the descriptions of what these features do I am having a hard time determining if its worth it to purchase a new card just to get that support. For those who lived without it, and then with it... what say you? thanks in advance!! Rammjet
CI and QE: Core Image and Quartz Extreme. If you don't do much with any sort of graphics, you can get along without them. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/coreimage/ http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/quartzextreme/ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/29646-are-ce-and-quartz-must-have-features/#findComment-204500 Share on other sites
JustBrowsing
I've just installed OSX on my Inspiron 600m, and it has a Mobility Radeon 9000 which as of right now does not support Quartz Extreme or Core Image. As with many many notebooks, changing the video card is impossible. However, I'm surprised what I can still do without QE and CI. iPhoto (which is the main program I run from the iLife Series) runs just fine... as does iDVD. Unfortunately iWeb doesn't run correctly because (I think it requires QE, and CI) Still, if you don't do major grahpical applications -- having no QE and CI won't prevent you from doing much. DVD player doesn't run either; but VLC works ... . In many cases there are workarounds for QE and CI if you have a fairly newish PC. Sabr
Well, it just improves eye candy I suppose it helps greatly with the special effects side of things. And maybe if your playing DVD's or something. Also, if you hold down your mouse and make a big selection box on your desktop, you will see it gets slower and less-smoother once it gets bigger. Rammjet
Go to the System Profiler in the Utilities folder. Click on Displays/Graphics on the left and read about Quartz Extreme (QE) and Core Image (CI) on the right.
