ASUS P5W DH DELUXE + MSI X1600PRO -> 'evil' combo?

Hardware:

- ASUS P5W DH DELUXE w/ E6400

- MSI X1600PRO PCI-E

(- SATA HD if that matters)

I've been trying a couple of times using:

- fresh JaS 10.4.7 install: install is fine, but when i boot (no patch or whatever right after install), I can never get to the desktop ('stuck' boot process somewhere after driver)

- did the boris method to setup the card, still same problem after that ('stuck' at the same step in boot process)

[ See this post for details of what 'stuck' means during my boot in case you're interested: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...767&st=1260 ]

I'm starting to wonder if that combination isn't 'evil' in some way?

Anyone with the same combo and sucessful? If yes, how did you set it up?

NOTES:

- I'm mostly interested in knowing if SAME mobo and SAME video card work TOGETHER. I know people have had success with either one and different combos, but never ran into a post with this combination. I might have missed them and so I'm wondering.... and thus this forum topic.

- If you have the same mobo AND have a sucessful fully working video card (w/ QE/CI/DVI), please let me know what's your exact video card model! Worst case I'll return my MSI for something else!

Thanks for the help! Any help! It's very frustrating. I thought I'd have no issue with the P5W and the MSI.

It is probably not the mobo

but the Boris method on your video card

I don't think it is a 'evil combo' thing

It is just a video card thing.

I h ave Asus eax1600xt card and it craps out at bootup.

I gave upon Boris

Reinstall but do not do Boris.

It seems Boris is not working for a lot of people.

You will get basic video and if lucky QE/CI but will probably have to change resolution manually

Hope that helps

Thanks for the input.

The problem on my side though is that I can't even boot up to the desktop w/o any change after the default JaS install. I'm not going that far (w/ or w/o tweaking the graphic drivers after a clean install).

I fail at that 'display match failure' message thingy (if I start in -v mode). So... I'm thinking I really have something wrong with my config to fail right there?

The video card itself is supposed to work w/o any problem, this is the card that boris himself used to 'develop' this install method. So it's working for him, and it's working for a few other folks from what I've seen in the boris method topic. I checked that I'm using the right vendor/device ids, it's all good (checked under windows where i got the values from).

I really don't have anything else in that PC beside the mobo and the video card (and a few HDs, not sure if that could have anything to do with my display failure messages?).

Ok, I'm having an idea now...

...maybe these messages are 'normal' and just pointing me to the wrong direction... maybe my system just hangs right after writing these messages but the hang has nothing to do with the video card?! Possible, huh?!

So now, my next question:

To MSI X1600PRo owners who have set things up with Boris method -> when you start with -v, do you see 'display match failure' messages? If yes, then I guess I can focus on trying to find what craps out my boot right after that...

Anyone with MSI X1600PRO PCI-E who could start with '-v' and tell me is they see what I see?

More precisely, do you see this:

I didn't try that. I guess I'll give it a try. This video card is supposed to work fine on DVI though, that's why I bought it in the first place :P

I do get the DVD install working perfectly thru DVI though. Wouldn't that not work already if DVI wasn't supported on my card?

i have installed osx on P5W DH Deluxe with Sapphire X1600 pro and XT

as well was successful P5WDG2-WS same video cards.

Using boris installer on 10.4.7. Works like a charm.

One running Dual core, the other running Core 2 Duo.

Did you use the installer?

I used this

http://www.installers.dl.am/

Installed everything for me, rebooted and I had QE/CI

  • 1 month later...
  • 3 weeks later...

I have an ASUS A8N-E premium and an MSI RX1600XT (exacly: RX1600XT-T2D256EZ)

http://www.msi-computer.de/produkte/graf_i...hp?Prod_id=553#

Its curious: I have QE/CI without patching, I get the video direct after installation. I also have fast OpenGL. But I have some artifacts and never got full mode switching, always 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz. No patches really worked, with NeoPheus' installers I get mode selection, but no more CI/QE and no OpenGL. With the Natit driver I didn't get to the GUI when booting in -v mode. It's frustrating.
