Hello,

As my old ATI 4350 graphic card is pretty obsolete (and makes games crash), I am looking for a new one. My budget is about 100€ (120$) , I am using Lion 10.7.3. I wish to keep this future card as long as I can (Mountain Lion compatibility?). If the card is passive (no fan) I can invest more :)

What are your advices?

Thanks!

Also do yourself a favor and don't get a passive card since there are cases when some gpus will run at full blast at all times and wouldn't want that with a passive cooling card.

My general rule of thumb when trying to go for longevity like that is to skip at least one gen. AMD is at the 7xxx now so I'd suggest if you can go 6xxx as i did from a 485O. I just honestly don't see the point in going from a 4xxx card to a Juniper or Cypress card when there are already traces of the 7xxx cards in ML. I'd suggest you save up a little more because Apple tends to kill stuff off [legacy products] without notice so just to be in a safe spot I'd go 6xxx if your budget allows.

the 5xxx cards are still existent in ML likewise the 4xxx but it's always good to do a good future proof purchase.

[also I just noticed this is in the nVidia section o.o ]

Just my two cents of course.

Thank you for your answers, I posted in the Nvidia section because I thought ATI cards were outdated but this is maybe one of my mistake, I am not aware of the market.

I looked for the 6670, but I found some topics explaining you had to flash it to 5770 to make it work, which model of 6xxx are you advising me? Is there a topic I can read to learn how to use new graphic cards? (I am currently using a special kext for my 4350, maybe the osx86 world evolved and there are new things to be aware of).

Here is an "ordered by price" list of products I can pick : http://www.ldlc.com/informatique/piece/carte-graphique-interne/c4684/p1e48t3o0a1+fv121-7169,7170,7171,7229,7231,7138,6806,6807,6902,7759,7746,7778,7729,7687.html

Thanks again ;)

You're welcome and I'd avoid having to go down the flashing another rom to your gpu. I'd say the 6850 if you can get it literally works out of the box and there's multiple threads in the ati section that helps you on getting it up and running. I personally wouldn't mind helping you to get it running because it's really an easy card to get working as others have said and I myself am running a 6870 which took about 5 mins of my time to get all ports working. The site you linked me to they sell their cards on the pricey side I've noticed seeing the 687O running for quite a lot.

It's up to you in the end though but I'm just suggesting you put your money into something that you know would give you less headaches than another.
