I've got a MBA, so it's been a while since I've messed with a hackintosh, but when I was, I was using Boot Think because it allowed me to install it as a bootloader on a USB thumbstick, and store all of my modified kexts and DSDT on the thumbstick, while keeping my OS X hard drive 100% vanilla. It made repairing a borked system super easy. It just meant booting and installing an OS X DVD (something bootloaders couldn't do at the time), and it was back to normal. It made it almost feel like a real Mac

So do any of the current generations of bootloaders, like Chimera or XPC, support running off a USB?

Chameleon and its forks (Chimera included) run just fine off a USB stick. Just use Chameleon installer and just point to your USB.

Be careful because you can't just use Extra/Extensions on USB for all your kexts as some need to be placed in in /System/Library/Extension (AppleHDA and such)
