tigerbee
Hi, thanks for the beautiful instructions for setting up a virtual machine with lion. I have noticed, that while Zenith's driver works very well (kudos for that!), it has no support for Quartz Extreme. Is anybody activly working on QE support? I don't have the knowledge to contribute programming-wise, but would happily chime in a few $$ (and I'm sure others would, too) to support such an effort. tigerbee
No thee ins't really any work going on on QE. As I said, I would gladly contribute a little towards development. Maybe thru a bounty? I'm sure many would appreciate QE capabilities in a virtual environment. I'll write an email to vmware telling them that I'll buy an additional workstation license if they make QE available Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/269988-vmware-and-qe/#findComment-1758450 Share on other sites
Zenith432
too bad, thanks for clarifying. I'll write an email to vmware telling them that I'll buy an additional workstation license if they make QE available See my comment to beecher. FYI, VMware have had people working on adding hardware OpenGL acceleration for Linux guest since Nov 2009. Linux OpenGL functionality is fully documented in Mesa or DRI, and that project is still not finished. Unlike Microsoft or Linux, Apple writes its own Graphics drivers for all the display adapters they support. Intel is the only GPU maker that publishes detailed descriptions of how to program their GPUs. The other GPU makers (Nvidia, AMD) provide that information only privately with commercial NDA agreements. Apple's interface for OpenGL drivers is an internal, unpublished API. It contains about 100 functions. Apple can and does change it without notice every few OS releases. The only public OpenGL interface published by Apple is their top level CGL interface that is meant for applications. There is no official way to intercept it, in order to extend to other hardware, and its dispatch table consists of over 700 functions. For VMWare to reallistically support QE, they'd need Apple's cooperation in providing them the internal interface for their GL drivers, and allowing them to keep up as they make changes in it. Apple doesn't sanction virtualizing OS X on anything but OS X host, and guest must be the server version. hardware OpenGL is hardly necessary for servers. There was some talk of Apple allowing the virtualization of OS X server over ESXi as a substitute for their discontinued Xserve product, but so far they haven't changed that policy either. sebus
Related to only last sentence from previous post: ESX5i does install fine on Xserve3,1 & one can virtualize OSX Server on it sebus Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/269988-vmware-and-qe/#findComment-1758593 Share on other sites
Zenith432
Related to only last sentence from previous post: ESX5i does install fine on Xserve3,1 & one can virtualize OSX Server on it sebus ESXi can virtualize OSX on any hardware on which it runs I was referring to whether Apple allows it or not. Xserve has been discontinued by Apple, but of course there are existing installs. Rhinofart
Sebus. Do you know if ESXi 5 (Vsphere 5) will install on an Xserve 2,1 (2008 Edition)? I purchased one from Ebay 8Core, 32GB RAM, and 3TB SAS Disks for the sole purpose of installing Vsphere 5 on it only to find out that only 3,1 is officially supported. I'm really hoping that Vsphere 5 will install on it as I don't really want to dish out over 2G for Parallels Bare Metal Edition. Mathew777
Hi, i don´t know, if my problem has to do with QE, but i installed successfully Lion 10.7.2 on VMWare Workstation 8, only one thing is not OK. In iPhoto i cannot see photos in a large format. Also iWeb shows nothing, when i try to create a new website, i get only a blank page. Does anybody know something about this? Any solutions?
