Hi Linux fellas,

I can imagine that quite a few people on here have GMA950 graphics on their machine - OSX86 and MacIntels oblige :D I was wondering how those of you using a Linux distro (or 2 3 4...) and a native res 1680x1050@60 were able to get the GMA950 to run WITHOUT having to resort to VESA.

I tried everything from the Intel drivers to various hacks in the xorg.conf and the 915resolution 'driver'. VESA gives me 1680x1050 only 'virtually' which I suppose is actually a lower res but 'blown up' to the LCD's native res.

Small fonts look horrible (hello headache) and the TV and video performance is absolutely hideous. The Linux VESA drivers are really foul. The GMA950 looks good in OSX though.

I looked everywhere but nobody can really give me a clear answer if my problem can actually be solved as long as Intel doesn't make an effort to release a distro-independent driver.

BTW I'm running Mandriva 2006 power pack but for instance Suse or Ubuntu were not any better.

Any clue is much appreciated

cheers

sol

A shot in the dark here, but perhaps the XGL version of dreamlinux (which velayo mentioned in another thread) is worth a try. Since it is is supposed to install with XGL, it would have to have full 3d support automatically installed also, giving you more resolution options. I'm sure ATI and nvidia are the target demographic but maybe Intel too?

Otherwise I don't know how to get the most out of GMA950 on linux. I do have GMA900 but it is disabled because I have an ati card.

Cheers for the reply mate!

If dreamlinux is as good as its looks I might give it a try. The XGL version seems to be still in beta though... hmm

As you mention the ATI, I've still got a Radeon 9700 floating about but wasn't sure how OSX (and Linux) would digest the double whammy. I definitely want to keep the GMA950 active cos' it's the most hassle-free for OSX.

It seems like Intel graphics are not too popular among Linux developers...
