VooD
Hi, I'm about to build a new hackintosh, but I can't find the information I need: a list of all video cards which doesn't need plist editting, binary patching, additional drivers in latest SL and Lion. I hate having to patch or doing edits with every new update, that's over perfomance for me. The problem is nowadays, 95% threads about drivers, and hackintosh ends with something like this: "install ##### + ##### then select this..." So I can't find wether the vga's are working with default drivers or need any of the dozens of patches included in that tool. IMHO that kind of tools are hurting the community a lot. It's making people to lose control of their systems. Now is..."works with #####+multibesat" or "doesn't work at all". Lots of people doesn't have a clue about what steps to take if the install fails at first try with that tools. So what cards just need and enabler / GraphicsEnabler = yes for 10.6.7 / 10.6.8 and Lion? Gringo Vermelho
512MB 9800GTX+ device ID 0x0612 Works with Chameleon GraphicsEnabler=y and unmodified drivers. Dual DVI/VGA displays, mirroring, rotation. If you need analog SDTV out you'll have to inject additional properties via DSDT gfx0 device or through device properties string. But it will work perfectly, several resolutions available, rotation, overscan, everything. I have not been able to test HDMI output (possible via DVI - HDMI converter). The card has spdif passthrough for HDMI audio so if your motherboard's spdif output is working then you can have HDMI audio working right away. I have not used this card with Lion but I don't see why it wouldn't continue to work. At 1280x1024 the card scores in the low to mid 4000s on all working tests in OpenGL Extensions viewer. Gaming performance is great too. Only tried a few Source Engine games though. IMHO that kind of tools are hurting the community a lot. VooD
Thanks for the answer. I already knew of that card. The problem is compability with newer cards...that's where the real mess is. Gringo Vermelho
If that bothers you I guess you could look at the GTS 250, apparently it's a relabel+die shrink of the 9800GTX+. It should work just as well, only draw less power and generate less heat, which is always nice. Check out the Gigabyte brand 1GB version for example. There's a similar thread going on here btw: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=256103 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/259345-list-of-working-cards-with-no-patching-additional-drivers/#findComment-1697800 Share on other sites
Art2Fly
Nvidia 460M and 460 work in lion with graphics enabler set to yes. Beware random kernel panics still occur due to the fated fermi freeze problem, however, if you play a video in VLC in the background, they wont occur Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/259345-list-of-working-cards-with-no-patching-additional-drivers/#findComment-1698401 Share on other sites

Beware random kernel panics still occur due to the fated fermi freeze problem, however, if you play a video in VLC in the background, they wont occur I knew about those cards, and also about those kernel panics . I guess we all hoped the panics would get solved with Lion, but it seems they still present. Apparently the only 4x0 which doesn't have panics are 470 and 480...but they are expensive and drain lots of power. It seems graphics cards are upside down now with osx. Until a year ago more or less, nvidia was the way to go, now Ati seems easier to configure, and more stable. The problem is I would miss Cuda and PhysicX if I were to get an Ati. Gringo Vermelho
Yeah unfortunately you're right. I just had to have the GTX 460 though knowing full well how it is "working" in OS X. Maybe it's possible to use an additional "headless" nvidia card just for CUDA and PhysX even if your main video card is ATI? I know you can dedicate an nvidia card to PhysX if you have two but I don't know how well that would work in games if the primary card was an ATI card. I have no idea really but I'm sure someone out there has tried it. I used to use a ATI and an Nvidia card at the same time but that was on XP and a long, long time ago, before CUDA and PhysX. It worked great, there was never any problems. I used the ATI for SDTV-out with a homemade VGA to SCART cable and a utility called Powerstrip that allowed me to tweak the hell out of the ATI cards display output. Ultra crisp, pure 1:1 15Khz RGB signal, perfect for movie watching and even some light gaming (it was a Radeon 7000 PCI, I still have it in its original box somewhere). VooD
Hehe, I have that cable too. I made it in order to use AdvanceMame and get REAL exact 15khz resolutions from every game in Mame. If you looked the original arcade and the emulated game with that cable it was completly impossible to see the difference. And now....a little bit of off-topic stuff Here's a comparison between different outputs modes. - CRT VGA monitor 31khz (bilinear) - CRT TV SVHS - CRT TV using RGB with Advance Mame at 15khz via VGA->Scart RGB. Gringo Vermelho
Beautiful shots, thanks for sharing, it looks totally badass. The three comparison shots of Ghosts'n Goblins is a whole argument in itself for doing something like that. I guess you believe like I do that arcade games should be played like the designers intended. At least as far as display and controls are concerned. I could never get it quite right with just Powerstrip (too many parameters to tweak, maths is not my strong side) and Windows MAME but some games (easy ones like Neo Geo games running at 320x240) were perfect. It's a pity they don't make AdvanceMAME anymore. If you still have a working Windows PC with a nice video card (Geforce 86xx or better) you will want to check out the new HLSL effects in MAME. With a bit of tweaking you can have a CRT-like image with artifacts, color bleeding, curvature etc etc, all via pixel shaders, on your flatpanel monitor. Being pixel shaders, the effects processing is done entirely on the GPU and does not slow down the emulation unless your video card can't handle the maths.
