eelhead
That looks great! I didn't go with a MATX board I have an ATX one and couldn't fit my PSU where you have your so I did a PSU mod as well into the G5's PSU case. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=255820 http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=16300 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/257124-case-mod/#findComment-1684100 Share on other sites
Gus.Carrie
How many hdd? And nice mounting of what i think is the processor cover? on the bottom there. Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!! What did you do with the rear I/O cut or keep cool original. Did you use the original standoffs, just glued in the atx hole positions? everFrame
Thanks Guys! I tried to keep things as stock as possible, but like everyone else, once you get in there, things needs to be modded quite a bit. I cut into the back, but created a rectangular frame to fill the gap between the ports and the perforated back of the case. and then just used the asus i/o shield. so everything lines up smoothly with no gaps, and looks pretty cool, since everything is slightly recessed like the pci ports. I decided to mount the psu in front, and used the original g5 processor cover to create the exhaust. It couldn't fit any better, and required only mounting it. I used the original g5 power plug, stripped the filter from it, and soldered my own cable to the psu. the board is mounted with the original g5 standoffs, cut down a bit, so the i/o ports would line up straight. There are 5 hdd's total, 2 in the original g5 mounts, and 3 in a custom mount with a 120mm Xigmatek fan (XOF-F1251) in front. I created the custom mount from some flat aluminum pieces that I picked up from the home depot. I wanted it to fit 4 hdd's so I measured and cut the pieces accordingly. Then drilled holes in each to mount the disks, and used "L" brackets to mount the cage to the g5 case. to swap hdd's, I must remove the entire cage. only a pain in the ass sometimes, but I prefer it this way to some of the bulky cages I've seen for sale. For the other fans, I used the apple mounts, but replaced the fans with quieter ones. even with rewiring the voltages of the original g5 fans, they we're way too loud, and unacceptable. For right now, I'm using the power button on the mobo, but am in the process of rewiring the power button/led and making my own mounts for the front usb and fw cables that I stripped from an old machine. the case was a late 2005 quadcore and didn't have the nifty front power button/usb/fw combo cable that some of the previous model dual cores had, so it's not re-wirable. I forgot to take pictures of the entire process, but will update the thread with more finished pics shortly. thanks again!
