10.6.6

I've been using a Geforce 7950 GT with dual displays and having great success. I recently upgrade to a GTX 460. The first time I booted up to one display at 1024x768. I installed the most recent NVIDIA drivers (Retail_256.01.00f03v5) and it restored my displays.

Now everything is working great except it crashes after an hour or two. Ideas?

Ideas?

Yes! Use the forum search before posting, this is a known issue.

There's also a looooooooooooooong thread about this issue over at the tonymacx86 forums. Easy to find with google.

The current theory is that the freezes occur when the GTX 460 switches power state.

Several people report the OpenGL watchdog kernel panic occurring while using Firefox.

The freeze and the kernel panic seem to be unrelated.

Best available fix is to leave VLC running hidden in the background, looping a video.

Believe it or not I did give that a read before posting. I guess I was secretly hoping that there was a better answer than looping a video all day long. After crashing in 10.6.7 I ended up returning the card and switching back to my 7950GT. Looks like Radeon might be the best choice for an ultra-vanilla box.
