Very interesting.....

In fact I have an external 160 Gb SATA II disk which i will partition (140 Gb for Apple data, the rest for windoze) on which I want to install WinXP.

The only thing to do is tell the bootloader to search for the winXP installation inside the external HD, and it should work.

I'll do research about it.

Disk imaging tools simply don't work with the current Mac situation - meaning real Macs using Boot Camp and trying to image the Windows partition as a form of backup. The EFI is causing issues with how the imaging software (both Acronis True Image and Norton Ghost and a few others I've tried so far) reads the MBR that's created for the Windows partition during the install.

There are reports, just reports and no hard evidence, that people have had success installing Windows to an external Firewire drive using Boot Camp - not USB external drives however. There is something different about how the hardware works with Firewire over USB and some people at the MacRumors forums and other locations have said they've had success doing an external Windows install.

I'm going to try that myself here sometime today since I haven't so far since getting this iMac. Worth a shot I guess, and can't hurt. Besides, the 300GB external Firewire drive I have gets roughly the same Xbench disk scores as the internal 250GB drive, so I shouldn't be losing much performance with Windows on an external.

Now it's just a question of: will it work?

I'll report my results and tips if I come up with any.
