thrillhou
I started a thread before with no real help. I've got Snow Leopard Server running on my hackintosh. Everything works perfect out of the box except sound (but that's not important as it's a server). So no additional 'kexts' needed. Basically all I need it to do is boot up without the aid of a bootloader medium. I currently need to have '#####' in a portable optical drive to boot it up. Not a big deal as it's a server and is always on. But I do need to reboot it sometimes. I know it can be done. How can I get my Hackintosh to I guess 'self boot'. I don't know what the correct term is sorry. Specs are Q6600 GA-X48-DQ6 8600GT Thanks in advanced
dothacker
u didn't install Chameleon or PC_EFI during your install?
3.14r2
You need to install a boot loader AND some kext(s) plus some other stuff. Search the forum - plenty of information is available.
thrillhou
u didn't install Chameleon or PC_EFI during your install? No I booted using ##### and installed Snow Leopard Server. Everything worked fine. You need to install a boot loader AND some kext(s) plus some other stuff. Search the forum - plenty of information is available. If you could point me in the right direction that would be great. Because yes I've done heaps of searching but there seems to be so many different bootloaders, etc... I have no idea where to start.
Gringo Vermelho
Type Chameleon manual install into google. Or you can use iFabio's install package for Chameleon 2.0 RC5. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=231075 You'll still need to manually add the required files (com.apple.Boot.plist, smbios.plist, kernel extensions) from your boot CD. The kernel extensions will be on a ram disk image at root of the boot CD, the rest is in the extra folder. Refer to the Chameleon documentation (VoodooProjects forum) for more information. Google each item on the boot CD to learn about what it's for, etc etc.
thrillhou
Thanks for the link. I assume they are just the files needed. Is there some sort of install guide, or is it in the download? Thanks again Also, what I gather is that I need to reinstall OSX again using the above method? I can't use the current installation I have? Gringo Vermelho
Thanks for the link. I assume they are just the files needed. Is there some sort of install guide, or is it in the download? I don't understand what you're referring to exactly, please be more specific. I already told you how to find install guides. As for iFabio's installer - just read iFabio's initial post. And (as I said) go to the VoodooProjects forum and read the Chameleon documentation. Please do this before asking any further questions. Also, what I gather is that I need to reinstall OSX again using the above method? Not at all, how did you get that idea? The nice thing about where you're at is that if you don't get everything right at first, you'll still be able to boot with your ##### CD. Go ahead and experiment until it's working - you have nothing to lose.

Sorry about the questions, I would download the file and have a look but I'm on my work machine. Cheers
Gringo Vermelho
You can still download the file and have a look though. Go read up on things, establish some base knowledge before asking questions otherwise you won't understand the answers!
thrillhou
Well that's why I was asking on places to start. This is the Newbie Forum after all? I've been using real Macs for years, but the OSX86 thing is completely new to me. I just feel that there a so many different install methods, and I don't know which one to choose? There doesn't seem to be any real easy to interpret step by step guide for complete noobs.
Gringo Vermelho
If you're installing from scratch, there are in fact only two basic install methods: -Use a generic boot CD (myhack, #####, Empire EFI and whatever else is out there) to install from a store-bought OS X retail DVD -Hacked distro DVD If you already have a working or even partially working Hackintosh, you can also install retail OS X like this: Use Apple Disk Utility to partition and format a blank hard drive (GUID/HFS+J, non-case sensitive) create at least two partitions, one of them a ~9GB. Install Chameleon to the EFI partition, follow my install guide at the Voodoo Projects forum. Chameleon 2.0 RC5 r6xx download attached. Whip out your retail Snow Leopard install DVD and Use Disk Utility to 'restore' it to the ~9 GB partition. This is the hard part: Work on configuring your Chameleon install until it can boot into the partition that holds the restored install DVD and successfully run the installer. Only fakesmc.kext is mandatory, the rest depends on your hardware configuration. Install to the third partition. Voila, retail OS X. Plus you can always boot into the partition that holds the retail DVD if you want to do repairs etc etc.
