themadgreek
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum, so I have a couple questions ...I guess like every newbie! So here's the thing: I want to get myself a Macbook Pro someday, but right now I don't have enough cash to buy it AND I still have my Dell notebook who's still running - it's his 2nd birthday in a few days :-) Drum roll please... I wanna put OSX on it but I don't really know if it is possible. Tada! Big guess, heh! I would like to know if by posting my detailed configuration, you guys could tell me if I can do it. So, using Everest, here it is: --------[ EVEREST Ultimate Edition ]------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Version EVEREST v5.50.2100 Benchmark Module 2.5.292.0 Homepage http://www.lavalys.com/ Report Type Report Wizard [ TRIAL VERSION ] Computer IASSON-PC Generator Iasson Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 6.1.7600 (Win7 RTM) Date 2010-10-19 Time 21:00 --------[ Summary ]----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Computer: Computer Type PC avec processeur x86 ACPI (Mobile) Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Professional OS Service Pack [ TRIAL VERSION ] Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385 DirectX DirectX 11.0 Computer Name IASSON-PC User Name Iasson Logon Domain [ TRIAL VERSION ] Date / Time 2010-10-19 / 21:00 Motherboard: CPU Type Mobile DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, 2100 MHz (10.5 x 200) Motherboard Name Dell Vostro 1310 Motherboard Chipset Intel Crestline-PM PM965 System Memory [ TRIAL VERSION ] DIMM1: Hynix HYMP125S64CP8-S6 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (6-6-6-18 @ 400 MHz) (5-5-5-15 @ 333 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz) DIMM3: Samsung M4 70T2864QZ3-CF7 [ TRIAL VERSION ] BIOS Type Phoenix (10/09/08) Communication Port RIM Virtual Serial Port v2 (COM3) Communication Port RIM Virtual Serial Port v2 (COM4) Display: Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS (128 MB) Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS (128 MB) 3D Accelerator nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS Monitor LG Philips LP133WX1 [13.3" LCD] Multimedia: Audio Adapter Realtek ALC268 @ Intel 82801HBM ICH8M - High Definition Audio Controller Storage: IDE Controller Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850 IDE Controller Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller Storage Controller A4LI16TI IDE Controller Storage Controller O2Micro Integrated MMC/SD controller Storage Controller O2Micro Integrated MS/xD Controller Disk Drive ST9320320AS (320 GB, 5400 RPM, SATA-II) Optical Drive HOLIB V8X6RWTU SCSI CdRom Device Optical Drive Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-7640A ATA Device (DVD+R9:6x, DVD-R9:6x, DVD+RW:8x/8x, DVD-RW:8x/6x, DVD-RAM:5x, DVD-ROM:8x, CD:24x/24x/24x DVD+RW/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM) SMART Hard Disks Status OK Partitions: C: (NTFS) [ TRIAL VERSION ] D: (NTFS) 10238 MB (8016 MB free) E: (NTFS) 170.8 GB (14.5 GB free) Total Size [ TRIAL VERSION ] Input: Keyboard Clavier standard PS/2 Mouse Dell Touchpad Mouse Souris HID Network: Primary IP Address [ TRIAL VERSION ] Primary MAC Address 00-21-5C-8B-C3-AF Network Adapter Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (192. themadgreek
Oops, I forgot to mention it was a Dell Vostro 1310. Here's what I found: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...les#Vostro_1310 Any comments ? Thanks
3.14r2
It probably means you could install OS X too...
themadgreek
Great news then! Here's an excerpt of the wiki page for Vostro 1310: Install method: Leo4ALL v3 (10.5.2) GUID, EFI V8, default Kernel (Version?) What does that mean ??
3.14r2
Leo4ALL v3 - distro (dvd disk name) name that was used to install OS X 10.5.2 - OS X version. Leopard in this case GUID - the partition scheme used to partition OS X target disk EFI V8 - an outdated boot loader. Currently I suggest using Chameleon default Kernel (Version?) - any comments needed? It might mean the vanilla kernel or the default kernel for this particular disk (I don't know which kernel is used in the disk) Bother to use the forum search, please. themadgreek
Thanks a lot for your really quick answers. One more thing than I promise I won't bother you anymore - and use the forum search 10.5.2 - OS X version. Leopard in this case Does it mean I can only install 10.5.2 or I can try with the 10.6.4 ? And if I can, I guess this is a good tutorial: http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/ibo...ac-os-x-on.html, right ? Thanks for your time. 3.14r2
Does it mean I can only install 10.5.2 or I can try with the 10.6.4 ?The hardware specification tells that Snow Leopard should work perfectly well. So you can try installing both Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow leopard (10.6.x). There is a slight difference in the procedure for both OSs. I guess this is a good tutorial:I can not guaranty that for 100%. I'd say it is good for reading in order to understand what it takes to install OS X on a PC and how that works. It probably be batter to search for some notebook specific guides, as there could be some specific issues to face.Like this (read it more like general info then like a Guide), or this (pretty old though but may be useful to get idea what are alternative methods) and so on... themadgreek
Great! I'll try with Snow Leopard then. I'll follow those two tutorials: http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/ibo...ac-os-x-on.html http://kylesinterestingstuff.blogspot.com/...ow-leopard.html And I'll let you know the end result. Step 1: order SL
themadgreek
Alright, I bought Snow Leopard and the PC is getting prepared for it's evolution. And there's that silly question that popped out in my mind: What's gonna happen with the keyboard ? Mac keyboard are slightly different, I wonder what will be the end result... Will it be the same keys or will i have to put a sticker on each key to relabel it ? (Don't know if my question is clear though...)
3.14r2
For the most part it will be the same keyboard. The keys that might differ are: Control (CTRL), Alt, Windows Logo. Insert key will not work. Fn key might not work. Multimedia keys (if present) might also not work. Other keys should work as is. For the Ctrl, Alt, Win key you might reassign them using a build-in keyboard preferences. Also note that in order for the build-in keyboard and touchpad to work, you need to use a PS/2 driver, as OS X doesn't support PS/2 devices by default. The driver should be present on the boot disk (the disk you will use to boot the retail SL DVD). Alternatively you may use an USB keyboard&mouse. Damiankossek
But you may have problems with your wifi card, there isnt drivers for them

But you may have problems with your wifi card, there isnt drivers for them Oh that sounds really bad since I'm using wifi everyday... Any workaround ? I've heard they were in development. Damiankossek
You can swap wifi with another compatible card or use a usb wifi, yeah they are in development since 2-3years ... Maybe in next 2years they will be ready

3.14r2
Can you explain the swapping part please ?(I'd prefer not having to use an external usb stick) IMHO he meant to buy another (compatible) Wi-Fi card. There could be a pitfall in the BIOS. I don't know if it applies to Dell, but HP for instance have a list of supported cards build in to BIOS so you could only use the card that HP sells instead of any you like. Sure it could be "cured". So check if the above applies to the model you have.

Let me see if I get it right; I will have to open my laptop and replace its wifi card by another mac os compatible one, but there could be a limitation in the BIOS so you can only install some models and not others. So, a couple questions on that: a) how do I check if there is such limitation ? (and how do I know which models will be accepted by the BIOS ?) where can I find such card ? (I mean it's not like you can run to your typical hardware store and ask for it as if it was just an USB wifi stick, right ?)
3.14r2
Let me see if I get it right; I will have to open my laptop and replace its wifi card by another mac os compatible one...Exactly! Usually it is a Mini PCI-Express Wi-Fi card. It also can be half-size Mini PCI-Express card. Depends on the notebook model. ...but there could be a limitation in the BIOS so you can only install some models and not others.Exactly! It COULD BE, but not necessary it is. A quick Google search tells nothing about such limitations on the notebook you have. So any card should work. But you should do a proper search before you buy anything.where can I find such cardAny big computer hardware store should have them. It is not something very rear. Also you can look on Ebay for a used one. Used are usually cheaper but functions as new. P.S. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...amp;mode=linear list of snow compatible cards. Alright, great, we're getting to something :-) So basically, I should order that card: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BroadCom-BCM94321MC-...2a07c00584#shId And follow this manual to replace the older one with it: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...ml/minicard.htm Then I should be good to go for Snow Leopard. Am I right ?
Damiankossek
Yea, But first install snow leopard and check that others driver works if yes then buy that card and replace it

3.14r2
...Am I right ?Yes, like that. You can also check your local Ebay site http://www.ebay.fr/ (if I understood correctly your location - sorry if not). It should be faster and cheaper buying it locally (on the local Ebay site). You can install SL without having a compatible Wi-Fi card. Install goes fine without it, as long as you have wired internet (LAN) working. Wi-Fi card can be replaced any time later.
