apple-tv-2010-300x288.jpgApple today announced an all-new Apple TV to replace the previous hard drive-based models, with a cloud-centric approach to consuming video and music.

No more sync'ing: the new Apple TV now streams all content from either a Mac or PC with an iTunes library, an iOS device such as an iPad or iPhone (running the yet-to-be-released iOS 4.2), or from the Internet via YouTube or (if in the US or Canada) Netflix.

The Apple TV also has other neat touches such as the ability to be controlled from an iOS device via Apple's Remote app. The unit itself has shed some weight, clocking it just a quarter the size of the outgoing Apple TV model, and featuring a built-in power supply, and just the bare minimum output ports: HDMI, optical digital audio out, and 10/100BASE-T Ethernet. It does of course also feature 802.11n Wi-Fi for wireless streaming, and also the current aluminium Apple Remote, all for just $99.

There's a mini usb and Bluetooth support. How long until this baby is hacked and becomes an ultra cheap iOS desktop computer?

if someone hacks it to play hulu that would be great otherwise it's just something to feed apple's iTunes profits heck they should give it away for free, considering it's a frontend for the itunes store in order to play things I recorded off the air I'll have to use eyetv's export feature and then add it all to my itunes folder before I can play it :S

well hacking it might be a good thing jail break the apple tv if they do that I might buy one if I get the features I want. But here's the thing if it can play you tube that must mean it has flash support, wonder if that's coming offically to the iphone and ipad as well :S

There is already YouTube support for both the iPad and iPhone. They don't support flash. You don't need flash for You Tube.

It has NetFlix which may be of more interest than Hulu at this time.

hmm weird anytime I right click on a youtube video it says flash player but that's on a desktop :S. Anyways, hulu is great when you dun have cable alot of good shows end up on hulu.

and you dun have to pay 99c or more per episode!

netflix is great but it costs money as well.

It's just the same ol' aTV in a smaller form factor. What are the processor specs? Apple isn't talking except to say it's their A4 chip, no mention of clock speed. As you know if it's any kind of benefit, they would tout it, so it must be low. If it had the power to play 1080p from multiple file formats it might be worth buying, even if it was just to hack it and put XBMC on it.

I gave up my aTV 1.0 because it sucked for playing most HD files that aren't re compressed for it's ATV slim profile. The only value the old version had was in cracking it to XBMC, but otherwise it was exactly what people say - a front end for the iTunes store that you have to pay for; they SHOULD give it away, or even sell them at cost. It would be a great way to grow their market share.

That said, I got a WDTV Live and it plays all my stuff over the network with no hassles. The interface is a bit light, but it plays youtube as well and it allows me to plug in 2 external USB devices and it plays just about every file format you can think of... Oh, and it does have hacks for it too...

I don’t see why you are so surprised as to why Apple isn’t sharing the clock speed of the A4 chip inside the new TV because it’s a TV first off clock for clock speed wouldn’t make that big of a difference. (Simple comparison would be a 4 ghz Pentium 4 vs a 2.0 core2duo clock for clock isn’t the only deciding factor)

The TV was made to play at 720p if you expect it to play 1080p smooth as pie then don’t be disappointed because Apple clearly stated that it is made for 720p unless they recently changed that statement. One thing I’m not disagreeing on is that it is a real “front end” to the iTunes mania because of how nicely it integrates with iTunes they should practically just give it away but free doesn’t exist in the magical world of Apple as we all know.

If you’re looking for something with usb ports and can play different types of media formats aside from the few Apple restricts you to, then this is not for you because you need more than just an TV.

@ andrewson: that is probably the most relevant post I’ve seen in sometime for a first post. Congrats.
