Just how important is QE/CI?

When I first got my new laptop, an Acer Aspire 5532, I rushed out to download the latest iDeneb release and installed. This was Mac OS 10.5.5, I believe, and it was a total disaster. My internal wireless card didn't work at all, and everything I tried just seemed to make it worse. I tried to use two different USB wireless adapters, which also didn't work. Then there was my graphics card, which I played around with for a long time and finally managed to get native 1366x768 screen resolution with, but never QE/CI. Audio failed for me with the Apple Azalea drivers, but before I could play around with that anymore, I gave up and went back to Ubuntu.

Now, about six months later, I've been hearing great things about Snow Leopard and its relationship with Hackintosh. I've been doing my research and seen some apparent improvements. According to forum posts, VoodooHDA now supports my sound card, albeit with the occasional bug and without internal mic access. It's still possible to get full screen resolution in Snow Leopard, and it's also still impossible to get QE/CI. The reports on my wireless card have been considerably more varied and less helpful, but it seems at least some people have had successes with it.

So here's what I need, if any kind souls can answer my questions or point me in the right direction:

  • Just how important is QE/CI to the system? I mean, can I still run Photoshop, InDesign, and maybe some iPhone game development software without it? Can I still watch movies and listen to music (locally and online) without it? For god's sake, can I even see the screensaver without it?!
  • I need a reliable Atheros AR5B93 kext, and preferably some firsthand experience using that wireless chipset in OS X. In fact, if anyone's tried OS X on this laptop or with this kind of hardware before, I'd love to hear from you.
  • At this moment in time, is it possible to dual-boot with a Snow Leopard Hackintosh partition and Windows 7? Then I could use OS X most of the time, but I'd still have the option for Windows if I wanted to play a game or something...awesome...

i dont have QE/CI on my Lenovo Ieadpad Y450 laptop but i'm still able to play 720p mkv's just fine (I have Core 2 Duo CPU). Can't do random screensavers, frontrow or vlc. I use Mplayer and sometimes Quicktime to watch videos. Youtube flash videos play just fine (HD has a bit studder and full screen is a tad bit slow). I hear you can run older versions of Photoshop (Not sure the version) and iWork etc without QE/CI. There are also workaround/alternative apps for Apple apps that don't work because of lack of QE/CI.

As for the dual boot i'm doing Snow Leopard and Windows 7 just fine using Chameleon V2 RC4. I didn't have to configure anything just installed bootloader during setup of SL and boom it worked.

Thanks for the info! I have Photoshop CS5 (just ugraded) and Photoshop, InDesign and Dreamweaver CS4, GameSalad Creator, and iLife and iWork '09. (With regard to iLife, I really only use iTunes, iPhoto, and occasionally Garage Band.) I'd prefer not to hunt around and buy older software just because I lack QE/CI, so do you think these will run?

EDIT: I've heard from a number of sources that my wireless chipset, the AR5B93, will work automatically with the latest Snow Leopard 10.6.3 update. Can anyone confirm or deny that directly?

Anyway, I'm going to do the installation this weekend, as soon as I finish backing up all my stuff. 40G partitions each for Snow Leopard and Windows 7, and another 80G partition for all my personal files. Excitement~!

Matt, I have the same problem as you. I'm really worried about XCode & ios SDK support of my Mac installation. My Asus MB does not support QE/CI and I'll problably need to develop some iphone Apps. Do you know if anybody have tried iOS SDK iPhone Simulator without QE/CI??? Does it works??

Thanks
