Kext removal

The install method I am using puts the old fakesmc.kext in the /extra/extensions folder. That folder also has an extension.mkext. Thing is though that having the fakesmc there doesn't allow fake smc to work. Yet if I install fake smc it won't work because there is one in the extra folder. If I delete it by placing it in the trash I get a kernal paninc. So all I need to know is how do I remove the fake smc from the extra folder without getting a kernal paninc and being allowed to install the newer version?

Uh..I had to read that a couple of times. Why don't you just replace the one in the extra folder with the new one?

If there's a fakesmc inside the mkext, just delete the mkext as well and use cVad's Kext Utility to build a new one.

Permissions don't matter in /Extra (Chameleon doesn't care) so set yourself as owner so that you don't have to type your password everytime you want to change something there.

I know it sounded confusing, sorry about that. Thing is though, on Project OS X forum they state that fakesmc is not to be installed in /Extra. Plus, when I use kext utility all it does is install it in System/Library/Extensions. So how can I use kext utility to build a new mkext? Sorry if I am a little slow, I am still new to the whole thing.

fakesmc runs fine from /Extra/Extensions. If you just put it in /Extra, it won't work!

Like I said..Chameleon doesn't care about permissions in /Extra or any of its subfolders, so you can just drag fakesmc to /Extra/Extensions, you don't have to do anything else or use any kind of tool when you work with kernel extensions or other files inside the /extra folder tree.

To rebuild your mkext, simply drag & drop your /Extra/Extensions folder onto the Kext Utility icon.

For completions sake, Extensions.mkext resides in /Extra, alongside the Extensions folder, not inside it.

Awesome, so I can delete (put in trash) the fakesmc in there and then replace it with the new one. Then drag /E/E (/Extra/Extensions) into kext utility and rebuild the extensions.mkext in /Extras. Also, is there some way I can back up my stuff before I start (Like entire OS) incase I get a kernal panic?
