hey,

i currently have an amd set up installed using 10.6.1 installed through the custom dvd available. Id like to update it to 10.6.4 but im not sure whats the best way to do it.

I was considering the Zephyroth's AMD Software Updater but would that work at a time like this? i would then install the kernel from http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=221599.

what you guys think? any other success stories with people updating that way or any other better ways?

cheers

Download the combo update from apple's site(NOT THROUGH SOFTWARE UPDATE). After that's done installing DO NOT REBOOT! Then install the new 10.6.4 Legacy Kernel that you posted in that link.

I would recommend you read up some more stuff on that thread about the sleepenabler.kext that I think is giving issues. Other than that you should be fine. ALSO....if you using DVI-HDMI on your video card, it will no longer work once you update to 10.6.4. Have fun.

How is not restarting possible if the installation cuts off with the restart screen- totally freezing everything and nothing is possible?

'Not through software update'. <--- If you read that you would see.

Updating through software update automatically restarts your computer. I told him not to update that way, but to find the combo update online(you can get it from apple themselves), install it, and you won't be forced to reboot. You can actually go to 'Force quit' and kill the update installer after it's done updating.

You can update through software update if you change the kernel to the "legacy_kernel" in com.apple.boot.plist, Regardless there's no need to download the kernel if you've already got it and need to update, aslong as it's in the .plist it won't boot mach_kernel, will automatically boot legacy.
