I've never had this problem before but I've spent almost all day perfecting this final render in Cinema 4D and about 9 hours into choosing an appropriate render my machine started behaving strangely. C4D crashed, then all of my other open apps started to crash. Firefox would not open and stay open for anything. I rebooted and things seemed to get better.

When I got the machine running stable again it totally turned itself off about 30 seconds into the render.

I was able to reboot every time but it crashed about :30 into any render. Even rendering out of Final Cut Pro it turned off. Yes, turned off, not crashed.

I'm not sure what temperature would have to do with it since I've been using this machine since January and have had no problems like this until now. I don't even know how to diagnose it. I haven't changed or touched any of the hardware in about 4 weeks and the power has been good in this room. (and I have a UPS)

Obviously this has to with the processor but I can't seem to understand how to fix that. I haven't changed a thing.

Has anyone come across anything like this?

Help please, thank you

if you let the machine sit at the BIOS screen, does it shutoff?

if you use the machine for everything else other than rendering, does it shutoff?

grab a linux boot-cd image (ubuntu, etc) and boot into linux from the CD and let the machine sit there to see what happens.

good luck.

Hello - it only turns off while I render. I've done a series of tests and it takes about 1min47sec before it shuts off.

I can run the machine pretty well in a recreational sense but as soon as I try to do an After Effects RAM preview or a Cinema 4D Render it will simply shut off.

I am able to go into BiOS and it will remain on. The machine will remain on forever as long as it doesn't have to use the processor at a high volume... can anyone pin point what the problem could be based on my tests? I'd be more than willing to try other tests. I'm actually using the machine right now for simple file management processes and web browsing.

I've reseated the Ram and checked all my connections and the problem persists. I don't have Linux and that's not something I know how to use yet I'm simply running OSX 10.5.6.

Thank you for your ideas. Are there any other possible causes?

I am running iStat but I can't monitor my CPU tempurature just my HDD temp... I always thought it was a problem due to the nature of my Kernel or hardware configuration.

Is there a way to hack iStat so I can monitor my CPU temp? Or any other software that can do that? (I have the most current version of iStat)

I'd really love to get back to work - I've been dead in the water for the past three days and I can't even do a RAM Preview.

Well I tried the FakeSMC.kext but it didn't help me with seeing my CPU temp in iStat... not really sure what else I can do.

I went out and bought two new cans of compressed air and POW - blasted all the dust out of this machine. I felt like such a slob because it was so freakin dirty.

Then I took time and really made sure my RAM was seated properly - and hmf! -one 2GB stick was not seated all the way! Dunno how I missed that the first time.

Then I took my CPU heatsink all the way off, held up and away from my machine and blasted the sucker. The dust that came out of that thing man! I spent a good 10 minutes making sure the heat sink was properly seated and secure.

Proud to report that my machine REMAINS ON and seems to be eating up this render! Oh mannnn, I am back in business!!!

Thank you to everyone that helped me! I'd still definitely like to know how to get my CPU temp in my iStat... I went digging around but couldn't find a solution. I read on NetKAS that I had to uninstall dsmos.kext first... but I read in other posts that that's "Dont Steal Mac O S" and that would prevent my machine from working. Is there anywhere I should read about getting it to work?

Thanks everyone!!!

If it's purely by heat, you can just open up the case, and put a room fan on it to see it improves. If does not, something is broken.

The temp by CPU or northbridge which is shutting down the machine, most likely

Somewhat broken vcore regulator is feeding too high voltage to CPU and CPU is overheating.

If not, maybe the northbridge fan is broken. If so, you are lucky. buy a new fan and put it on.

When the famous "popped cap" was happening a lot, the machine started random crash/reboot because of unstable vcore.

If popped cap, the motherboard is a toast.

There is only one way to diag. Replace component one by one until it works. I'd start with motherboard and PSU.

I've seen the random crash by popped cap on a few. Bad memory almost as much as popped cap. Bad power supply a couple of times, and simple overheat on less but on some machines.

Good luck.
