I wasted 3 days installing off an HDD before it gave off true signs of failure. I need a new drive regardless now

I know SSD's are tricky, but how tricky are they in OSx Installation? Does anybody know from experience on this? Post the very SSD Model if you had success with it. i it is more work to install off an SSD than I will just pass.

I recently switched to an SSD on my Acer One D250.Just installed Snow Leopard as I would normally,no issues ,no problems, nothing special.I find the biggest advantage is the startup time(from pushing the start button to working desktop in about 20 seconds).I used an OCZ 30gb drive that was on sale for 90 bucks

Don't spend too much time just purchase the Intel or OCZ.

First thing is not get to greedy with speed on running HFS+ on SSD's. Speed will always be greater on a Windows system and there's no cure for this on a Mac OSX as of yet. What tends to happen is once all the cells are riddled with data on the SSD writes tend to degrade a lot and the Mac OS can't recover sense it doesn't TRIM the SSD. A normal SSD will suffice sense it will degrade anyways. Remember it will most likely still be faster than the fastest HDD even when fully un-TRIM. My advice get the VERTEX for primary not VERTEX2 or Sandforce SSD's. Reason is the performance hit to money spent if your using OSX on the SSD's. There is a reason for OCZ and other makers not claiming for use in with Mac and it has to do with them testing it out with less than stellar marks.

gsw953, has it well said!

I don't have a full understanding of SSD's. like degrading issues etc.

in my Price/Size/Speed range there I have every type of Vertex in the mix on my newegg list. is there a property or spec that tells me if it is good for OSx?

Full understanding of TRIM

Begining from history lesson

Mac Edition VERTEX Sticker is the only difference

Direct answeres from OCZ

Wow, browsing through this forum didn't think there were issues for motherboards AKA logic boards for Mac. Learn something new. RAID FAILING install sound strangely familiar!

. . . Crucial M225 f/w 1916 - basically any SSD with firmware supporting GC [garbage collection] works fine.

TRIM will be supported by OSX at some point; but function possibly limited to Apple-firmware SSDs.

I guess I should add how and why I came to the decision to use the OCZ Vertex 30gb drive. The whole SSD topic is full of myths and conflicting opinions so the more I read the more confusing this got.Life expectancy seemed to range from 2 years to 80 years,so if performance degrades slightly over time what time should it be based on,80 years?who would care than.2 years, that could be a factor. The OCZ warranty is 3 years,so it would be reasonable for me to assume the drive would last at least 5 years of normal laptop use(3 to 6 hours a day)I usually keep a laptop 18 months to 2 years so the 3 year warranty is good.Next I determined the size I would need.Spending over 400 dollars for around 160gb storage seemed like a lot.Snow leopard and all the programs I use are under 8gbs I have a 2tb Windows Home Sever and by removing the 250gb drive the Acer came with and putting it in a case I determined a drive around 30 gbs for the operating system and stuff i use all the time would be more than enough.Music, video and other stuff could go on my now portable 250gb drive and if I really needed a file I could get it from the server. All the OCZ reviews I read were positive and so far I can say I am very happy with my decision,my next build will be a laptop with 2 drive bays, 1 for a small SSD to boot from, the other for a large HHD for storage

Basically the SSD's can install OSx. but will degrade faster on OSx and wont utilize it fully. as well for a single drive for files etc it will degrade faster compared to if I was just using it to boot software and applications.

I can manage a 60gb drive. but it will degrade fast for what I do. for the most part the topic stablished that OSx can be installed off an SSD.

I will probably pass on SSD's for now
