ditchmagnet
The video card does not need to be fancy, just needs to be able to support QE/CI and dual monitors. It will be running retail snow leopard based on DigitalDreamers guide. I would also like the price to be under $100. Thanks. ditchmagnet
Any 9*** series Nvidia card, I have a 9500GT ready to go into mine once its built. Ok, cool. I was thinking a 9500GT too since they are cheap and that is the basic card in the mac pro. Any particular brand that works better than others? Any particular brand that works better than others? I'd like an answer to this question too. Looks like the 9500GT can be had for $44 with free shipping. What if I only needed the card to run webpages (as a second card) is this a good choice? benraymond
I am looking for GPU recs as well, namely: What's the fastest card that is supported with the minimal amount of tinkering? NVIDIA or ATI? How easy is it to work off of two video cards? I was looking at the 4890 but it seems that people have to fuss with it lots Thanks Ben Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/215901-building-a-new-ud5-bases-system-what-gpu-to-get/#findComment-1453344 Share on other sites

ATI is on average much more difficult or impossible. An Nvidia 285 is the fastest that's currently well supported. It's possible that one of the new 470s or 480s might work, since Nvidia uses a unified driver model (one of the reasons why they are generally much easier to make work), but I haven't seen anything on if they do or not. Two cards seems to be problematic, SLI or Crossfire is right out. My iMac runs a 4850 (which are hard to get) - I wonder if that will help compatablility Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/215901-building-a-new-ud5-bases-system-what-gpu-to-get/#findComment-1455125 Share on other sites
mdnz01
Hi, just to add - I also run an NVidia GTX 285 with dual DVI outputs and the only thing I had to edit in the boot.plist was GraphicsEnabler = Yes. This makes both ports work with full accelaration. That is, if you can spare the extra money of course.
