semipro
I have just completed my list of hardware and am about to order this: GRAPHIC CARD: Sparkle SX98GT1024D3G-VP (GeForce-9800GT with 1024 RAM) PROCESSOR: Intel® Core i7-860 Prozessor 4x 2800 MHz RAM: G.Skill DIMM 4 GB DDR3-1600 Kit (Motherboard says it only supports up to 1333 RAM, but this one is not more expensive, compared to 1333 RAM Kits...) DRIVE: Samsung SH-S223L MAINBOARD: GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 BLUETOOTH: Logilink Bluetooth USB Dongle v2.0 HARDDRIVE: 2 x Western Digital WD5000AADS 500 GB Caviar Green CASE: Antec Sonata III 500 Will these components work nicely together to enable me to install SL (Leopard too?) using the Vanilla Kernel method? Are any of the components outdated yet or will give me any problems soon? Should I go with a more expensive mainboard maybe? I will use this mainly for my work using mostly Adobe CS3 (Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Premiere...) How difficult is it to assemble this myself? I could have the system prebuilt for about 100$. I have installed a new graphics card in some of my old computers before, but I have never built an entire system, so I am not sure whether I should do this or not. This will be my first hackintosh, so any help is greatly appreciated. Mushishi
Read the rules then... you need 5 posts to start new topic. So please dont go hijack others topics. Griffwill
you will have no problem with this build, it's a very supported set up. I'm running on a UD2 with an i5 750, the same ram, and almost the same video card. the UD2 WILL support the 1600 RAM at full speed, but you need to set the memory profile to profile1 in the MIT Frequency tweaker in the BIOS, this will OC your CPU, but you can bring it back down (if you want to) by playing with the multiplier and BCLK. For me it took my 2.66 i5 to 2.8 GHz but I brought it back down due to heat. Don't waste your money and get the system built. I've had mine up for about a month and it was my first time building as well. The advantage is that you know your system inside and out, and if something screws up hardware wise, you'll mostly know how to replace it. Also, that hardware is going to work for you for a while. If you *really* wanted to go to the 1366 boards to prepare for the 6 core i9s then be prepared to drop a couple hundred more, but you should be fine for a while. It doesn't sound like you want a massive gaming rig, so the 9800GT will be fine. I have the same card, but with 512MB of ram and I can run Bioshock at full res on my 23" monitor. So, if you're planning on using this mostly for CS3/4 you'll be fine. When you do build, just take your time and do you're homework first, watch as many {censored} youtube videos as you think you need to. NewEgg has a good short tutorial on how to put all the parts together. For the install side of things, poke around here. Tony is on a UD2 and an i5, but has support for the i7 as well and some really great guides and walkthroughs. Thanks to his site I was up and running the within about four hours of completing the build. It's not nearly as daunting as it sounds. Good luck, let us know how it goes. EricM
I would recommend not buying the Caviar Green drives. They are rather slow since they are 5400rpm. They are good for storage, but nothing else. trust me... I own one. Get alteast the caviar blues, ideally a caviar black. semipro
thanks for the advice Eric - i will do that! other than that I am not sure whether to go with another Motherboard supporting 1366?! I am currently running a Macbook Pro 2.16 Core Duo with 2GB RAM as my main computer, so I guess the current configuration should be plenty fast for my needs as a web designer. on the other hand faster is always better :-) I only rarely play games and especially not shooter games, so I am not really interested in the fastest graphics card or processor, but I would like to run my applications like Photoshop as fast as I need and that has been a problem with bigger file sizes for posters etc. in the past. The only thing that would be of a special interest would be maybe to get a SSD drive to speed up boot up and application launches. Can someone give me some feedback on this - is it worth it. I would buy myself a 32 or 64 GB SSD drive just to run the OS and my most needed applications and leave the rest on another drive. Should I also go with two different hard drives or is it enough to have one drive with partitions for OS X and Windows (just used for testing browsers and gaming)? Thanks for your input so far, as soon as I get my hardware I will write if everything works out fine.
