4650/4670 with PC-EFI v10.6

Hi,

Will all of the 4650/4670 work with PC-EFI v10.6?

This update adds support for desktop Radeon 4300/4500/4600 graphics cards via the GraphicsEnabler feature.

If not, will any of the following work?

1. HIS 4650 1GB (H465FS1GP)

3. Power Color 4650 512MB (AX4650512MD2-LHV2)

4. Power Color 4650 512MB silent (PO46551D2HS)

*DVI working for some

*HDMI working for others

*VGA working for some

 

You need to enable the correct framebuffer! "Shrike" to get a fully functioning card

 

If you want perfection use a 4800 series

I can confirm my Visiontek HD4850 works completely using Snow Leopard 10.6.2 "ATI 4850 1GB Added Device ID to ATI4800Controller.kext" or use the Legacy4800Controller.kext very vanilla in my opinion .

 

Or hold out till 10.6.3 comes out

There is a possiblity that most of them will work but it will be different with each other (like what Hangten said). There is also a possiblity that some of them might not even work at all (even after changing framebuffers - ive already encountered one, i think it was palit daytona something). So it would be best that if you purchase, make sure you have the luxury to return/refund it. I had to return 2 cards before and found that the ASUS EAH4650 (low profile) works but VGA only - (changing framebuffer to shrike didn't help). Also, when you decided to buy one, share your experience so that others will know just incase they decided to buy in the future.

It all depends on the framebuffer. For example, under PC EFI 10.6 of netkas, device id 9498 (which is the 4650) has "Peregrine" as framebuffer. If you use PC EFI 10.5, the Framebuffer of 9498 has "Motmot". Final RC4 (even asere boot) has 9498 listed as "Motmot" as well. In my case, since motmot only works for my video card (4650), netkas 10.5, asereboot, rc4 works. 10.6 does not. So in order to make PC_EFI 10.6 to work, I had to download the sources then change "Peregrine" to "Motmot" then compile and now, 10.6 works for me. This also goes to other version of boot files, like rekursor's, prasys, andv, etc.

 

When you download the sources, you will look for a file called "ati.c" which is located under i386/libsaio of the sources folder. You just need to edit (look for your dev id then change "Peregrine" (for example), to whatever. Then type, "make" or "make embedtheme" - this depends on you.

 

You can use Prasys guide on how to compile chameleon on your own.

 

Again, make sure you know your device id and look at it inside ati.c - that is the only line you need to edit.

 

BTW, your question to number 1 about being "sure" .. I can't answer that. I encountered a video card (4650) that did not work at all - even after changing framebuffers and all kinds of "boot" files. You also have to consider how your monitor will be connected to your video card. VGA? HDMI? DVI? You have to research on this forum about people sharing experiences about the different 46xx cards that they purchased. Some reported only working in HDMI - some only DVI, some only VGA (like me). You will also need adapters like DVI to VGA, HDMI to DVI .. etc because that helps.
