domino
Just a shot here, but did you create those partitions as logical or primary? I think that might have something to do with it. Is it installed? Can you wipe the entire drive and test to see if it will install on the drive without partitions? Maybe try some trial and error. Play around and test a bit to make sure it all works. After all, you don't want to install XP and osx86 more than once. jason2k4
sure ill clarify, ok the dvd boots no problems, gets to the installer, its at the hard drive part where its messed up. the partition i made shows up to install too, but has a red ! saying it cant install cause it cant start up off this volume, i proceede to run diskutil and erase the partition, make it clean, it goes through the process, but doesnt accually change the disk, as for wiping the whold drive, i want to keep my windows xp intact cause i use it for work, i only have 1 drive cause its a laptop. domino
as for wiping the whold drive, i want to keep my windows xp intact cause i use it for work, i only have 1 drive cause its a laptop. I know what you mean as I too am using 3 partitions, XP, OS X, and FAT32. Which is why it's beyond me that you are having problems with your install. So that basicaly leaves you with pretty much no elbow room to work with. Playing with fire does burn as I have had to wipe drive last week for poor planning with installing OSx86. Maybe we wait for someone else that is in the same rut as you. Sorry I cant be of any help Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/2113-installing-dvd-dual-boot-partition-problems/#findComment-13696 Share on other sites
jegabla
What I did to safely solve this (in breif) without even leaving windows: - Make a virtual bsd machine as big as your destination partition (maybe some 700MB shorter for the partition table to fit in) and install osx into it. - I used an external usb drive to store the new virtual machine. Once it's installed and asks for reboot turn off the virtual machine. - Make your destination partition primary and AF type. You can easily do this using windows Diskpart. Make winxp's partition active. - Copy chain0 to C: and modify the boot.ini. - Make a new machine in vmware mapping your whole physical drive (that contains the destination partition). - Edit the virtual machine settings adding a second drive (*.vmdk) which is the one you installed OSx86 on. - Put your favorite linux distro in (I used Auditor) and start the virtual machine. Enter virtual bios to set your cdrom to boot first. - In Linux, open console and type: dd if=/dev/originpartition (in my case hdb1) of=/dev/destinationpartition (hda3 here) bs=8192 It'll take like 20 minutes to copy. Close all the mess, reboot and youre done. PS: I had to do it this way cause 1) I can't be bothered to install xp/apps again and 2) My laptop drive will not boot "non emulation booting" cds/dvds hope helps, cheers. jason2k4
ok so im still struggling with this thing, it seems like disk util can erase a volume no problme, but after its done, it doesnt mount it, and just reverts back to normal, doesnt save the changes... any ideas?
