kittierocks
well i just bought myself a 1 GB DDR for my emachines 3410 running leopard 10.5.8. i installed the 1 GB alone with out the previous 512 MB DDR that came with my comp. and the computer wouldnt start so i put both DDR's into both of my available slots and it started fine. at Chameleon 2.0 bootloader it said i had 1.4 GB of memory so it started loading but once is put in my password it gave me a kernel panic!!! I Rebooted and this time i saw the desktop background after i put my password but before the dock showed up i got the kernel panic again!! anyone know why??? whats wrong Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/210817-kernel-panic-after-ram-installed/ Share on other sites
an1r0n
I'm suprised no one didn't answer this. Lets eliminate hardware errors first. Download MemTest or run any ubuntu disk (has memory checker) and let a few passes. If your PC starts to make noise (beeps) and errors come up (mostly in red color) it means you've got faulty ram. so, get memtest (there is even iso verison for cd) and check your ram! well i just bought myself a 1 GB DDR for my emachines 3410 running leopard 10.5.8. i installed the 1 GB alone with out the previous 512 MB DDR that came with my comp. and the computer wouldnt start so i put both DDR's into both of my available slots and it started fine. at Chameleon 2.0 bootloader it said i had 1.4 GB of memory so it started loading but once is put in my password it gave me a kernel panic!!! oldnapalm
Do you use a custom DSDT file (dsdt.aml)? If so, you have to re-create it or adjust with the new RAM size. As an1r0n said, you should test the RAM, memtest can be downloaded as a bootable iso, you don't need to have Windows or Linux installed in this computer. It's included in many Linux live CDs, like Ubuntu. Install the new RAM, the system should boot fine without the dsdt.aml file. Use DSDT_Patcher to create a new patched dsdt.aml (with updated memory info) and copy it to where the old file was (/ or /Extra). If you made any change to the old file manually, do it again in the new one. oldnapalm
where is the DSDT file located at? It should be in the root (/) of the partition, or in /Extra if you use Chameleon v2. i shut down my comp, i put the ram in, i started the machine up, i started iatkos v7 install, installed only DSDT file on my hard drive, restarted with all the ram, got to login and another kernel panic You have to remove the DSDT file. When you boot with the new RAM the system must be WITHOUT the DSDT file, then you create a new one. But if the KP happens after the login screen I think DSDT is not the problem.
