Here are the computer specs:

OS: OS X 10.5.6

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

MOBO: Gigabyte EP45-UD3L

VIDEO: ATI Radeon HD 4850

so, I'm trying to install snow leopard on this setup. I have a running 10.5.6 installation working, but I'd like to update to at least 10.6.1 if possible. When I boot the Snow Leopard disk from a USB image in verbose mode, everything seems to go fine until I get to the graphical installer. I've tried two separate ways and received two different results. The first time, I got a garbled grey screen. The second time, I got nothing on the screen at all.

I've spent the better part of a day reading these forums trying to find something helpful, but I got nada. It's been a while since I tried to put together a hackintosh. Last time I had to do any real research for this was back when OS X 10.4 was out. Now with all this talk of DSDT and such, I'm rather lost.

If anyone can offer any advice, I'd be grateful. Currently, I've got a USB drive with the install disc restored to it. If someone could tell me the magical mix I need to get things working and how to put them on it, I'd be in their debt.

Got the same problem ... :happymac:

does anyone know if the new pc-efi bootloader from netkas will help? he added support for a few new cards in the graphicsenabler, but 4800 series is not listed. of course, i don't know if it was working before, though. i'm going to try it in a few minutes.

Relative to Nvidia, ATI video cards are a bear to get working. When one boots into Mac and all the loading text scrolls by, one of the last lines you see includes ACPI_SMC .... and the next thing you are greeted with is a blank or garbled screen, congratulations you have just installed and have Mac running. The only problem is Video is not working, if the sound is working (not likely) and speakers are connected you will hear the music of the Apple Welcome screen.

With an Nvidia card an EFI string in the com.apple.boot.plist for your particular card will give you video, or you can set the GraphicsEnabler flag in the boot.plist. ATI usually requires more than that. The new PC-EFI 10.6 is supposed to include the 4000 series ATI cards in the GraphicsEnabler flag. I didn't find that to be true on my latest install, I needed to modify some kexts with the card ID and add to the S/L/E folder to get the card to work properly. GraphicsEnabler will get video but no CI/QE.

For those with 4000 series ATI cards and no joy at video time, use the PC-EFI 10.6 bootloader, set the GraphicsEnabler flag and then search the ATI graphics card threads on this site for solutions to your particular card.

I had the same problem but found a simple solution. Boot the installation in safe mode using the -x flag from the bootloader terminal. It works 100%

If it worked for you, you are lucky. When I boot in -x, I am booted in Snow Leopard SAFE Mode. Resolution is stuck at 1024 x 768, and the computer is running crippled. It will not boot regularly, only in SAFE Mode. The computer is only running at about half speed, and sound does not work. However, LAN works.

I am seeking a solution.

SL 10.6.2

1. http://netkas.org/

2. scroll down and get this "Radeon 4830/4850/4870×2/4890 users, tired of adding device-id to ATI4800Controller.kext"

Where to place it

S/L/Extemsion (where all the native SL kext are)

3. Chameleon February 4, 2010 PC EFI V 10.6 (install while in safe mode)

4. com.apple.boot.plist must have <key>GraphicsEnabler</key>

<string>Yes</string>

* Located /Extra

5. Use kext Utility http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=140647 (and yes while in safe mode)

6. REBOOT and ?

My ATI Visiontek HD4850 works HDMI, DVI, VGA all working. You might need to get on another computer to download what you need to use or ect depending on what you have put this worked for my setup.

Pkg installer scroll to " put together an unofficial installer package using netkas' source. Just run it and reboot! You can also use this on a fresh system to install Chameleon."
