I'm working on an expensive OSx86 PC build. I have read alot of posts about the Gigabyte G41M-ES2L motherboard works well for this. Since I'm trying to keep this cheap, will the onboard sound, video, lan etc work with OS X or will I need to add a video card etc...

Thanks in advance!

How expensive are you trying to make it? The G41-ES2L is one of the cheapest boards there is. LAN works with the R1000SL kext, and I added the LAN0 device to my dsdt to make it built-in because EthernetBuiltIn in boot.plist didn't work. Sound works too with the right legacy hda kext. Sleep works if you change the device ID of the LPC device in your DSDT. I don't think video works, so I used a Geforce 210 for $35.

Thanks for the reply. Glad to see that damn near everything is working onboard!

Can anyone verify whether the onboard video is going to work or not? I didnt want to buy a separate video card but I will if I have too. Any other recomendations for cheap but decent graphics cards? I will check into the Geforce 210.

I recommend it aswell. I got it recently and its just amazing. It has 8gig of ram support which is (for me) pretty good. For audio you can use azaliaaudio.pkg and for video just use the myHack v1 Graphic Enabler.

The only thing I didnt get to work is the Lan. Banini you have one inbox message :(

cheers

No, the onboard video doesn't work for OSX- there's no hardware acceleration, which is a bit like using a computer in 'safe mode'- IE: it blows. As a general rule, onboard video never works- unless it's an ancient graphics controller like the Intel GMA 950 that you wouldn't want to use anyway. So, yes, you'll need a compatible video card.

I'd also recommend stick with nVidia- any supported 8xxx, 9xxx or GTXxxx series card should work fine.

So, just to be clear, it is possible to make the onboard video work with a hack?

{censored}, didnt see your post Zaap. Looks like I'll be finding a cheap add on card.

Yes the inboard video gma 4100 I think it is on the g41m-es2l will work it even supports quartz extreme with the right dsdt BUT it will not play videos and it will not allow you to do screen captures. Pretty much what I'm saying is, to get snow leopard up and running you can use the on board video but you will have to eventually add a graphics drive to have full function. I am using a nvidia geforce 8400 gs 512 mb and it is working great. It is capable of running blue Ray movies and HD and it was 49.99 at best buy.

I have all my hardware on order now, hoping to have it here before the weekend. This is what I'm looking at:

Motherboard: Gigabyte G41M-ES2L

CPU: Pentium 4 Dual Core E6500 @ 2.93 GHZ

RAM: 4GB (2x 2GB) Super Talent DDRII

Vid: GeForce 210 w/ 512MB (I noticed there was a 1GB version but only needed it to get me started).

My next question is, I am planning on using a Raid 0 setup and dual boot OS X Leopard (Not Snow Leopard) and Windows 7. Can anyone offer me any advice on doing so? Will OS X even install to a RAID?

Thanks!
