Here are some things i suggest if you wanted to go really cheap:

-Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo (about $80 on ebay)

-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (about $180 on ebay)

-For graphics i would suggest a 8800 GT (or GTS) (about $80 on ebay)

-4 to 8Gigs of RAM (I have 4Gigs) ($85 to $170 via NewEgg)

So just for those core components your looking at about $450-$540 (with shipping). Throw some hard drives, fans, dvd burner, and a case into the mix and your looking at maybe $750 total, which is still well below your budget.

I know its not the Core i7 you were looking for but this machine screams! This is the exact setup I have on mine (except processor is OC@3.0GHz). Honestly I don't think you will be able to tell much difference, unless you plan on doing a lot of Virtualization, etc. I run VMWare Fusion with Windows 7 without a hiccup as well. So thats basically my thoughts on the subject. Let me know if this is helpful haha!

nobody around here uses EFI-X/Rebel EFI, this is where you come to learn how to do what they sell at a premium by yourself.

there are TONS of options with a budget below $900 right now;

a cheap core2duo & LGA775 build for $325-475

a Clarksdale i3/i5 build for $425-600

a Lynnfield i5 for $500-800

or even a Bloomfield i7 for $600-900

You are correct about the ATI 5000 series, no drivers exist for OSX. The 7600GT is technically compatible, but not quite as foolproof as the 8000 or 9000 series nvidia cards.

For under $900, you can get a great machine! I would personally see if you can get an i7 860, or if not, go for an i5-750. Do NOT buy a Core 2 processor. These are over 2 years old and are on the way out. You should be looking for a 1156 or 1366 socket. Personally, I would go for this:

i7 860 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115214

Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro (For OC'ing)

Gigabyte P55M-UD2 (There is an in-depth guide for this by TonyMac)

This Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewProduct.a...N82E16820231193

Highly Recommend Antec 300 Case:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewProduct.a...9-042-_-Product

Any type of 600watt psu or above would be good for your setup with 5850. (I recommend Corsair, Antec, OCZ, etc.)

SATA DVD Burner (Sony Optiarc is good)

Western Digital HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136284

As for efi-x, IT IS A RIP-OFF!!!! Don't get scammed by them or rebel efi. They are taking code DIRECTLY off of this forum. Here is a guide to getting Snow Leopard installed on this system:

http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/11/os-...ing-retail.html

I would recommend either keeping your 7600gt or buying a 99.99 dollar 9800gt until support for 5850 comes (which it will I'm sure with new Mac Pros).

Heres a card for around $100 to tide you over:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewProduct.a...0-113-_-Product

Including this 9800 card, all should come down to around $850 on newegg.

This would be an EXCELLENT build and you would still have room for adding even another 4gb of ram if needed and still possibly be under 900.

And once again I cannot stress enough of how big a rip off EFIX is:

Currently im running a dfi x38 dk t2rb and have had no luck with either 10.5.1-4 have tried Iaktos and Kaly with no success at all. Cant even get it to boot. shows a boot flag and restarts. as i run now its this mobo.. 4gigs of gskill ram a e8400 oc'd to 4.0 and a 7600gt (5850 is taking a break while i try to get this running) running from a esata 500gig drive with 2 tbs and a 160gig with windows 7

also with a 650 wat corsair power supply

Not sure if im trying the wrong installation or not but i cannot get it to run.

If i can get it to run on this setup currently ill take my tax refund and build another i7 build for my gaming pleasure.

Thanks for all the replys guys!

I have had no experience with DFI, so I can't help you there. Have you tried using a retail version install instead of a distro?

negative. wasnt sure if it would boot so i played it safe going with distro gonna try ipc as i read someone had success with pc 10.5.6 and updating to .8 on leopard.

I haven't used iPC, so I have no input on whether or not it will work. All I can say is good luck! ;)

Keep us updated.

Is it simplier to just install leopard as opposed t snow leopard with the i7? don't have access to a mac (college isnt fond of students using it for this purpose) i have no problem using leopard as opposed to snow leopard

There is no reason to install 10.5... if anything it would be harder on a 1156. Can't remember which (think its 10.6.2) apple had the update for the i5s in the imac. I would personally just follow some of the guides to SL on the p55 boards.

Just spend the $30 on the leopard upgrade disc and obtain an 8GB or higher flashdrive or external HD.

i got leopard installed on my dfi board. running 10.5.6 right now. lan works audio does not. not sure about the rest so far. display drivers work on the 7600gt running 1920*1080 with no problems ;)

only thing now is to get audio working and update to 10.5.8

Had to run my external as usb and not esata kept giving me a waiting for root device

Updated to 10.5.8 through apple reinstalled patched through ipc install cd. Only quirk have to reset display resolution on each boot. Still haven't found a solution for audio stupid alc885. Was getting kernal panics with loading dmg, solved by installed 10.5.5 patch.

Scratch that. audio is working. digital dosent want to. but works with regular.

Edit. Audio is fully working. Will not read either of my WD 1tb hdds but will read my 160gig. Probably my doing.

Looks good. Except for ram, you need ddr3. And I would HIGHLY recommend not getting a "green" hd... they're slow boot devices and 5400rpm. (I made that mistake). Get a blue or a black drive. I would get the black, its the best out of the 3.

I recommend this ram:

Do you have hardware specs for bloomfield build? I want an i7 badly and want to be able to dual boot and also have the capability to upgrade chipsets in the future?

Any suggestions?

Ooh boy, sorry to thread jack but I cant post a new topic. Im strongly considering doing a build and have been reading alot. And want to get the reassurance that im getting the best and compatible parts. And have the easiest time doing this. this is my newegg cart, what you guys think? Thanks in advance guys, and sry again for the threadjack
