ileikcaek
I would love to use OS X and miss using Tiger on my ibook G3. I am interested as to whether my computers hardware would support mac os x snow leopard and whether it would support a retail disk with vanilla kernal (I doubt it). Intel Core i5 750 2.66 4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM (Dual Channel) 640GB SATA 3GB/s WD Caviar Blue NVidia GeForce GT220 (I think this is unsupported in OS X but not certain) Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller The motherboard is an OEM one but has the P55 chipset It's basically a new HP system Full Specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product...loc:0&cc=uk HP Pavillion P6235UK I appreciate the help, This post took me a while to create as the text editor seems broken in firefox 3.6. LogicalUser
according to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...product=4032769 your motherboard is manufactured by MSI, the MSI MS-7613 its onboard audio is the Realtek ALC888S which is very similar to those used on most of the hacks here, so should be compatible with the right config & pin layout. its networking is also Realtek, the RTL8111DL, again very similar, likely easy to get working no information is given about the firewire chipset used on the board, but odds are decent that it'll work without any setup. Assuming the rather limited HP BIOS gives you enough options to make the needed changes for OSX I see no reason why you couldn't get a vanilla 10.6.2 install going on that hardware. Even the video card is not impossible, several people have reported success with EFI strings you may need to craft your own DSDT file however, unless you can find one for that model, or a similar MSI board that'll work in a pinch (iffy) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208884-hows-my-hardware-looking-for-os-x/#findComment-1394930 Share on other sites
ileikcaek
Thank you for you detailed input LogicalUser. It does sound promising, I will have to look into it further. I don't want to pay for OS X if it's not going to work. I'm not sure How I will get hold of a retail version of OS X, Buying it would be ok but i'd have to buy the family pack? The Bios is pretty basic so it could be a problem maybe which is another reason a retail disk may be a bad idea. I hear MSI are forbidden by HP to provide a fully fledged Bios which is pretty sad on HP's part really. The DSDT file bit sounds scary, I haven't a clue what it is yet. I don't have a mac or know anybody who does (it looks like one is needed for installing a retail disk but not 100% certain). Personally in a way I wish I had of bought the mac mini instead of this, but in terms of performance for the money this HP system outdid it by miles! Cost £570 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208884-hows-my-hardware-looking-for-os-x/#findComment-1394966 Share on other sites
EricM
You only have to buy the $30 upgrade disc: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MAC_OS_X_SNGL Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208884-hows-my-hardware-looking-for-os-x/#findComment-1395013 Share on other sites
LogicalUser
The Bios is pretty basic so it could be a problem maybe which is another reason a retail disk may be a bad idea. I hear MSI are forbidden by HP to provide a fully fledged Bios which is pretty sad on HP's part really. I'm not 100% on what you'll need, but I'd take a browse through your BIOS and compare it against what people recommend doing on similar MSI boards. the HP BIOS will likely have all the essential options, just not the overclocking & finite control one gets on a non-OEM board. The DSDT file bit sounds scary, I haven't a clue what it is yet. I don't have a mac or know anybody who does (it looks like one is needed for installing a retail disk but not 100% certain). The DSDT file will take you at most a couple hours to learn how, and then to craft one manually. (one can pull the needed info from linux or windows) You don't need a real mac, but you will need OSX for some aspects of a vanilla/retail Snow Leopard install; the easiest way to go about that would be with a 10.5.x installation, a packaged distro seems a good choice, hell, a liveCD might even do it. got80s
I was pointed to this forum to ask if the parts I've selected will work based off the latest build of Snow Leopard. I compiled them into a google document http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tK-...amp;output=html Any feedback is greatly appreciated. ileikcaek
OK, I tried to install iDeneb 10.5.8 Lite onto my computer but it just would not boot. so I booted into windows and added the usual cpus=1 busratio=20 in com.apple.boot.plist using macdrive 8... I also tried the voodoo 9.8 kernal (I think it was that one) and it showed the grey apple screen instead of rebooting in a loop, but it just sat on the grey apple screen with the spinning thing and would go no further. I really don't think Leopard will work on this PC due to the new P55 chipset and Core i5 750 processor. I think Snow Leopard 10.6.2 will be my only choice? I haven't got hold of snow leopard yet and don't want to download or buy it. I would be happy to try OS X Leopard again, no problems, if anybody could let me know the best possible kernal to try? I think that's my problem at the minute, then we can work on getting other things to work. EricM
Snow leopard 10.6.2 is when apple added support for the i5 Imacs. You may be able to get it working with that, DEFINITELY not with 10.5. ileikcaek
I'm having a great deal of trouble getting SnowOSXv3.6 to even boot the DVD. it tries to load Darwin as it should but automatically reboots in a loop. it doesn't even allow chance to input any flags (which I doubt would help) I also tried to boot it in VMware (I have working Leopard in VMware) but that was doing the same, causing VMware to reboot the VM over and over. There is no Error messages to go from. just the repeating reboots. I tried various options in the bios and no help. I read up that some older MSI boards had a bad ACPI implementation circa 2007 causing OS X to not work but I'm not sure that would affect the newer P55 boards like this one. Should I give up with this distro? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208884-hows-my-hardware-looking-for-os-x/#findComment-1419619 Share on other sites

I have successfully installed SL 10.6.3 / 10.6.4 on this system (HP Pavilon p6370sc with MSI MS-7613 mobo). Everything works great (except ATI 4650 - I have NV 9600 GT). mac78
Hi! 1. Restore Mac OS X 10.6 Installation DVD.dmg to USB drive (using Mac DiskUtility). 2. Download and burn P55BootCD-MSI.iso from tonymacx86 site (my chipset is H57 but it works). 3. Restart computer, go to BIOS, set SATA mode to AHCI and "boot from option" to CD/DVD. 4. Insert USB drive. 3. Boot from burned CD. 4. On the EFI BootScreen select your USB drive and type this parameters: -v cpus=2 busratio=x maxmem=4096 (as x use value specific for your CPU from here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=642) 5. Install Mac OS X (error at the end of the install process is natural ). 6. Restart computer (after installation), remove USB drive and boot from CD once again (this time select your new Macintosh HD on EFI BootScreen and type parameters: -v cpus=2 busratio=x maxmem=4096). 7. Set up your system. 8. Install #####, selecting this options: - ##### for supported CPU, - nvidia enabler kext (for graphic card), - R1000 kext (for network interface), - VoodooHDA kext (for sound card). 9. Restart computer and boot from hard disk. Good luck! Scumble B
I have the same MSI MS-7613 board, using an Core i3 540, (busratio=23) , and 4gb memory, using the built in Intel GMA graphics. After install OSX Snow Leo 10.6.3 retail, using ##### 3.04, I can't get past the bootloader installation, basically the ##### settings and bootloader dont't boot. I can only boot from ##### 3.04, otherwise the system never loads directly from the system disk. even under safe mode or single user mode. I guess since I'm booting from the CD, the changes I implement with ##### are never loaded, for example, I select system profile MacPro4,1, but when booting from ##### CD, the system reports MacPro3,1 profile, and the VoodooHDA kext is not loaded either. When I boot from the hard drive in verbose mode, the screen goes black fairly early on in the process, and never comes back Could anyone help with this?
