I've got one of the best hackintosh around here: a compaq presario C500.

Recently, wifi problem (a broadcom 4311 not switched on because of a mini-pci problem) has benn resolved with an ApplePCMCIA kext from CHun Nan. With Azalia audio, the laptop works 100% except for sleep/resume (as almost all laptops with OSX) and headphones (same here).

It's a pretty old laptop, without any bling or fancy hardware (still an old GMA 950, 1,8Ghz Celeron processor, 1Gb RAM and 80Gb hard drive), but Leopard really screams on it and it even runs faster than windows XP... I can play HL2, for example, whereas on XP, it was so painfully slow that it was unplayable.

So, if you're looking for a laptop for basic needs and if you can still find it, this old compaq C500 is the perfect match.

thanks randall29 for the report. Sounds exactly like my Toshi. I could make the AppleHDA work following one of the manuals instead of the half-working Azalia but it would take several hours concentrated work.

The C500 is not even sold on ebay (nor .com nor .de).

Hi there !

I am running pretty well Snow Leopard under a HP DV6620ef laptop. Full 64bit.

Proc : Pentium Dual Core T2310 1,46Ghz, ok, speedstep ok

Mem : 2 Gb ok

GPU : Geforce 8400m gs (QE/CI ok) -> natit

Cam : suyin (working in Ichat, no photobooth support yet)

Sound : alc268 (voodoohda for SL, works fine but no microphone)

Keyboard/Trackpad : ok, running voodoops2 kext for SL, multitouch ok

Chipset : intel ich8 ok

SDcard port : RICOH not yet managed to get it working

WLan : Bios whitelist hacked, replaced intel 3945 abg by a broadcom mini pcie card, natively working

Optical Drives : ok, dvd burning ok

Bootloader : Chameleon 2 RC3 - EFI 10.3 updated, ok

Other OSes : Win 7 (dualboot) ok it's that damned Microsoft thing, don't blame, I play games :D

System is stable, nothing to really be sad about, maybe sleep/hibernate, which I wish I can soon get to work ! :(

hi EmphasiSAliasiS,

thanks for your great report! Can you give us a link where the DV6620ef 15.4" is still purchasable?

About sleep: have you tried Sleepenabler yet? Or different ACPI kexts?

Sorry, I wasn't able to find any available HP DV6620ef for sale on the net... It seems not to be sold anymore. Though, I'm living in france, so just try googling the name of the laptop, maybe you'll get more chance in your country

Edit : I bought mine a year ago for around 450 euros.

That's what I experience all the time when researching - many models are ONLY made for a specific market and cannot be purchased anywhere else. The HP DV6620ef even seems to have been discontinued totally. But anyway, it is good to know, because in my life used Laptops show up constantly, and then all these reports here come in very handy .. :thumbsup_anim:

I think the HP laptops with "ef" in the name are reserved to the european market, whereas those with "us" are reserved to the north american market.

By the way, HP laptops equipped with C2D proc and nvidia graphic card (like dv4 & dv5 series) seems to be mostly compatible with osx86

well "mostly" just isn't enough for a potential hackBook. The basics LAN, Sound, Grfx QE/CI, Wireless (OK if replacement required), USB 2.0, Sleep + wake-up from sleep, Shutdown and Restart simply must work. either in Leo or SnowLeo. But yes, the rest of the periphery might be considered complementary for most people (unless somebody really needs Fírewire, Webcam, PCMCIA etc.).

The MacBook is a laptop and it has full hardware support and acceleration. :D

Another comment Good!

The laptop of mine he is so consistent FULL when I get home, I can put it on the dock! (you see, more compatible than full compatible!) :P:P

Sorry if this has already been discussed before, I'm considering buying a Lenovo T500 for work use, I don't plan to install Mac OS X on it immediately but I'd like to have that option open, the first post said the T series are compatible, but since that post dates back to 2006, I'm wondering is the current generation still compatible?

Is that ATI mobility radeon 3650 supported?

and what about multi-touch? also just out of curiousity, does the little red dot work in OS X? (personally I hate that red dot thingy from the beginning, but can't help my curious mind...lol)

If this laptop is still fully compatible with the SL it will really be a great choice since I'm the type of person that just don't give a s**t about scratching laptops, to me they are tools meant to be used to do my work, so buying a real mac is not really an option for me since they need to be taken cared of, and I love the durability of lenovos..

Thanks in advance!

Lenovo T500 site:insanelymac.com :)

look at the search string, it is generic, you can use that for any search with Google - very efficient and successful, usually better than site's built-in search functionalities (esp. this forum's search .. )

I have done some heavy-duty research a few weeks ago which 15.4 and 17" models are the best HackBook Pros right now in terms of full compatibility, price and reviews/ratings, and the result is:

15.4": Dell Inspiron 1525, appr. $340 refurbished at the Dell Factory Outlet (you need to click your way through manually to the Inspiron 1525)

17": Gateway MX-8738, appr. $700 refurbished via Google Products (e.g. PacificGeek.com)

Smaller units incl. all netbooks are not worth it because they all cannot compete with the Dell pricewise = in getting the most screen inches out of your bucks .. ;)

For the above models there are all tricks, drivers and DSDT.AMLs available, even for Snow. Slice has the Dell Inspiron 1525 on white powder kitty, that should say it all ... (he made a 100% perfect modded DSDT for it, sleep/shutdown/restart, USB EHCI/OHCI etc., RTC ....)

Thanks for the reply, I think I'm going to forgo the idea about a hackbook pro for now, as I'm really not a big fan of Dell's mushy trackpad button :(

for the gateway, Since I already have a big and bulky 17" at home for my wife to watch movies on the bed, I really don't need another one of those laptop to crush my back :(

so maybe I'll stay with T500 + Win 7 for a while (amazingly, Windows 7 improved so much from Vista I actually don't feel that bad)

As long as I have my P5N7A-VM hackintosh at home :D

Thanks for the effort in looking into this subject, I'll do more testing and tinkering around after I get my T500. :D

Thanks again, appreciate it!

my wife is selling her macbook since she hardly uses it... she wants it to be replaced with another mac, but I doubt there is anything cheaper/slower out there...

I was looking at the dell inspiron 1525... for around $300 you can get one used online. only downside I see is the intel wireless... can the cards be swapped out for a wireless card that is supported under OS X? or is a PCMCIA card the only alternative???

edit: was reading and apparently they use the Broadcom chip that is identical to the MacBooks... who was saying they use an Intel chip???

anyway... I'll be getting a 1525!!

Hey I'm new to all this Apple stuff. I have always been a PC kinda guy but I recently noticed all the pros in having a mac. I was thinking of buying this HP laptop and was wondering if this Mac OS X 86 thing would work 100% on it (or at least I would like to know what wouldn't work).

http://www.shopping.hp.com/series/category...n!269764707

These are the specs on my customised version:

Intel® Core i7-720QM Processor

4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)

500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 320M - For i7 Processors

15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)

LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support

Webcam + Fingerprint Reader

Intel Wireless-N Card

It's easier to figure that out when apples launches their new Macbook Pro's, i read they'll probably use the i3-5-7 platform for those, so i suppose PC-Laptops with i3-5-7 will be easier to hackintosh.

Oh ok thanks that helps a little. But would anybody have any idea if anything on that laptop would or would not work for sure? I think the Wi-Fi won't work but I am willing to go without out due to the fact I will be dual booting with Windows 7.

From what I have learned so far from being here for about 15 hours is that it mainly depends on the motherboard, proccessor and graphics card. If anyone knows if those things will be good for mac osx86 please reply. :)

Thanks!
