Rental
Going to put in an order soon for a SL build based on Tony's P55 build... MB: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 Intel P55 Micro ATX CPU: Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit Video: GeForce 9800GT SLI 512MB DDR3 DVD: Optiarc AD-7241S Lightscribe 24X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer DVD-RAM SATA HDD: Samsung 1TB F3 Uhmming and ahhing about the video. I'd prefer to go for a cheaper ATI card but I believe they are harder to get working. Anyone confirm any cheaper cards that are compatible with a vanilla build? Also does Triple channel RAM work seamlessly? If I go for a cheaper video card I'm tempted to go with 3x2GB RAM? Mine has VGA / DVI + TV out output. I suggest to try finding DVI / DVI verison for EFI strings to work otherwise you will have to use kexts to get it work correctly (i use nvenabler which patch VGA rom on the fly). So, I suggest 8600GT with DVI / DVI output, you should get it for 60 dollars or less... About the rest of the rig, everything will work fine, get a nice CPU cooler for overclocking xD Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208072-another-i5-sanity-check-before-ordering/#findComment-1389912 Share on other sites

I wasn't aware of the limitation. I'll try and track down a dual DVI 8600 from another vendor. The one I'm using does very limited 8000's. I wasn't aware of the limitation. I'll try and track down a dual DVI 8600 from another vendor. The one I'm using does very limited 8000's. My problem is with VGA connector wich is first to motherboard and then DVI connector. That makes VGA primary and DVI secondary. Using GFX strings (efi studio or osx86tools) i can get card to be recognized and in system profiler quartz extreme and core image are supported but graphics are choppy when in DVI (video playback, expose etc.). But as soon as I connect VGA instead of DVI graphics are at full speed. Unfortunatly my LCD is VGA only and wide screen resolution is crappy on VGA connector. This is why I recommend DVI only card (or DVI first to motherboard and then VGA connector, but I'm not sure since I didn't try it) ; ) BTW, one card that will work 100% is NVIDIA GeForce GT 120. This is actually 9500 and but it has Mac bios. Hope it helps ; ) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208072-another-i5-sanity-check-before-ordering/#findComment-1389938 Share on other sites

Anyone confirm any cheaper cards that are compatible with a vanilla build? You could go with a 9400 GT because most of them work with just graphicsenabler=yes. Also does Triple channel RAM work seamlessly? If I go for a cheaper video card I'm tempted to go with 3x2GB RAM? No. With the board you chose, you can only run dual channel. The only way for triple channel is with a LGA 1366 i7, and the x58 chipset. EricM
In all honesty, you will be happy with a single 9800gt. 9500gt is ALOT slower and with a 9800gt, you can keep the video for longer instead of upgrading possibly the same year to something better. Just go bargain hunting for a cheap 9800gt or even an 8800gt. Better in the long run imho. And the higher clock speeds of the 9800gt will make graphics accelerated aspects of SL seem a lot snappier in some instances. Worth the extra cash and its simple to get working under SL. Rental
Cheers again all. Trying to find a dual dvi 9800 is hard work in the UK. Managed to find one on Amazon, not the cheapest though but is the ZOTAC ECO version which keeps power usage down: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zotac-9800GT-512MB...3597&sr=8-2 Any thumbs up for this or anyone know of any other suppliers? I wouldn't worry about getting an eco power 9800, all those are are just normal under-clocked cards to save power. I would personally just look for the cheapest one with the best reviews. Volklx86
I agree that the 9800 GT is the better video card choice to go with. I have the following running quite smoothly using Tonymac's method: gigabyte p55-ud3l i5 750 g skill ripjaw 4 GB(2x2 GB) 1600 (same as you) eVGA GeForce 9800 GT 1 GB (dual DVI/1 s-video output) LG DVD burner WD Caviar black 640 GB HD The only things on my build that are giving me problems are it won't wake from sleep and I am having issues with the DVD drive. I can vouch for the p55-UD2 board working incredibly well as a good friend has one up and running. The 9800 GT just works using Tonymac's method. My friend had a hell of a time getting his ATI 4850 to work properly. And sorry, I'm not in the UK so I would not know where to get a dual DVI 9800 there. Rental
Cheers. Looks like Novatech have all the bits I need - well they should be getting some more i5 750 chips in tomorrow. Here is the card: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/C...800GT512MB.html The rest is as in the first post. RobD
Hey Rental, have you managed to get your system up and running? Have been eyeing the same specs as yours, would be good to hear if it went well.
