hi all.

i've downloaded the os x 10.4.6 hotiso release and am trying to work out how to start the installation. only problem is that my dvd drive is dead.

is there any way of running the install without a drive? something like writing the iso image to a partition on the hard drive and installing a bootloader to boot from it as if it were a dvd drive?

any help would be much appreciated...

cheers,

jim

buy a new one...

:D

yes, that's the most obvious plan. but i've already tried 3 replacements with no luck - i think it may be a problem with the mainboard's interface with the drive, not the drive itself. well, for whatever reason, a new drive doesn't seem to be a possibility.

cheers,

jim

Hi there

Download and use DAEMON Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php) - free :D to emulate a DVD drive.

I believe it's the only way to install if you are using VMWARE anyway.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes!

I have a different problem: I can't download 4.5 Gig ISO's where I live (South Africa) - Internet bandwidth is way to costly here :(

in this link you will find a guide for people who don't have a dvd drive, or have problems with it:

http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=11314

But please search before asking questions, sometimes people wont answer you if it's in front of your nose.

thanks very much for your help. that guide looks like just what i need.

i did search around but didn't come across anything relevant - didn't know what search terms to use i guess - but i probably should have looked a little deeper.

anyway, thanks for the help.

cheers,

jim
