I have just upgraded the retail version of Leopard 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 using the combo update from Apple's website. I did some research before upgrading (not extensive) and from what I gathered it was possible to update with the retail version with no hassle. So I downloaded the update and went and let er rip.

The update went fine...no errors...it just required a reboot...the part where the blood pressure goes up and you can only hope that it works. Well...unfortunately it wouldn't reboot. It got as far as the Apple logo and then a screen telling me to restart.

Sp I tried to reboot a couple times with the same error but then I tried to boot into safe mode. I could boot into safe mode no problem. I tried a couple things seeing as that I was at least able to get to the desktop but still could only boot into safe mode (repairing permissions, removing AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, etc.)

Fortunately before the update I made a backup of my extensions folder. So while in safe mode I just replaced the extensions folder with my backup from 10.5.6.

I rebooted and everything worked. Just had to update the m-audio driver.

My question is...even though it booted up fine and everything seems to work (video, sound, networking...etc.) are there any detrimental effects from solving it the way I did?

The "About This Mac" says 10.5.8.

Of course after all that I found out that before the update I should have installed disabler.kext and dmos.kext.

Should I do the update again...but this time the right way?
