( Next week ) I'm really hoping you can lead me through these dark waters. When all's said and done I'm praying for some horse power under the hood as I'm a visual effects artist. So any insight is welcome here. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that translates to having a running computer (I already have a monitor and peripherals). Anyway, you think I can breath life into her? LogicalUser Posted December 10, 2009 Share Posted December 10, 2009 IMO the PSU you have chosen seems like complete overkill for your build. You likely could find a quality 600-750w 80PLUS certified PSU for about half that price that would be more than enough for a i7-860 and GTX 275 combo. Really, a 80+ certified PSU capable of a continuous 450w would do just fine. The Corsair CMPSU-650TX @ $50 cheaper would do just as well as the 850TX. Hell, it would likely even handle a i7-860 and a pair of SLI'd GTX 275s... My only real concern is the motherboard. The P55A boards are quite new, and I'm unsure if anyone has tested the USB 3.0/SATA 6 on the Mac side yet. M, Did you have any luck with this HW config? I'm looking to upgrade my PC and want to make sure the hardware I get is Hackintosh compatible. I'm trying to eliminate Windows from my life finally. I'll miss some games, but now that I've got Steam added to my WoW, I'm all good. Once I figure this all out, I could always dual boot for my game shell. I'm mostly interested in the GA-P55A-UD4P. Do audio and ethernet work? That's been my biggest problem so far on my older MSI MB, well, mostly audio. I've been look at the Gigabyte P55 as I had read that it worked, but some real world experience would help. heythisisdave Posted June 8, 2010 Share Posted June 8, 2010 This post gave me an idea that I think would be helpful to a lot of newbies (I post it here because I don't have access to post in the main forum). The idea is to have a set of canonical builds at different price points that are as hassle-free as possible. I'd like to build one but digging around the various forums and blogs is kind of daunting. Having a link to an Amazon wish list or New Egg list that I could just buy and start putting together would be awesome (and I think a boon to the hackintosh community). For example, a Wiki page that was updated with: Price Point 1k - Mobo - CPU Price Point 1.5k - Mobo - CPU Of course, variations in each price point for each component would make sense but it would probably give newbies a quick way to get into hackintoshing. crackintosh Posted June 9, 2010 Share Posted June 9, 2010 $280 for an i7 860? do you have a microcenter near you? if so you can get an i7 930 for 200. they also price match on other parts. i would go for a 930 + gigabyte X58A-UD3R mobo. even if you dont have a MC you can find the 930 for lower than that and the mobo is around 200....directron has it for 205 shipped. you should be able to find the hard drives for a better deal, check hardforum deals section or slickdeals...eWiz usually has good deals on them. my advice is dont buy everything from newegg, they dont have the best prices anymore. check froogle for all the parts you want to find the lowest prices.
