I'm looking to build an intel machine. I can't decide which one i should go with the 945G lets me use and 805 pentium D. I heard with the 915G it works out of the box and the 945G you need to use a 915 kext. Obviously the 915G with a celeron would be really inexpensive. What do you guys think is better or has a better value?

I think this is pretty much a price versus performance question. Both 915 and 945 chipsets work almost perfectly. If a 915 system meets yours current performance needs, than that should be your choice. Don't forget that in the next few months both these platforms will be completely obsoleted by Conroe.

Yeah i think i'm gonna get a 945G system when the price drop occurs on july 23rd. Conroe is gonna be nice but i don't want to spend like $200 on a low end cpu when the 805 will be down to under $100. I wonder how compatible osx86 is gonna be with the new cpu/chipsets though.

Apple uses the 945GM with SO-DIMMs (laptop RAM), these differences could be significant at some point.

Not really, there isn't any real difference in the chipsets other than power usage, support for Pentium-M (basically a different VRM, nothing more), and the SO-DIMM as opposed to normal DIMM.

I restate that do not buy a 915, it makes no sense as they don't even use that chipset. Hell, if anyone is interested in buying now, wait a few weeks there are 945 motherboards (http://www.asrock.com/product/775i945GZ.htm) that will take Core 2 CPUs (in addition to 956 and 975x).

i ended up paying the difference and got a 945 mobo instead of a 925 mobo. first i wanted a pentiumD cpu instead of a celeronD. plus i wanted more upgrade potential for the future. and yes my 945 mobo uses ddr2. everything worked out of the box with osx86 except a minor kext fix for audio.

Do you understand the differences between a system based on the 945GM and SO-DIMMs, and one based on the 945G and DIMMs, to state with confidence that firmware designed for the former, specifically Apple's EFI, will work on the latter?

I restate that do not buy a 915, it makes no sense as they don't even use that chipset.

While I suppose it is possible the Apple could somehow remove support for the 915 from OS X with 10.5, considering that OS X is basically chipset independent (meaning that OS X has been demonstrated to run on a wide variety of chipsets other than the 945 or 915, including AMD chipsets) it seems unlikely.

To the extent that 915 based motherboard can be found for significantly less money than 945's, they will still be a good choice for those seeking to build a budget OSx86 box.

i have an amd box but i've been frustrated with the support. Basically i was gonna build an intel box with their chipset with a G so i could at least have qe and ci support in osx. Is it gonna be possible to use a core 2 duo on a 945 chipset? Those benchmarks so far are impressive.
