Hello, very new to the hackintosh scene, but got it installed and running on my PC! I have a quick question, when I run software update I see there is an update for 10.5.8, I'm running 10.5.7 right now. Can I install this update?

Specs: iATKOS 1.7 installation

Asus P5K-E wifi AP

Core 2 E6600

4GB DDR 2 667

Nvidia 9800GTX

I used some .kexts to get my sound, network, and video to work, all work perfect! I want to install this update, but if it breaks everything, or if I need to reinstall the kexts then it might not be worth it.

Theoretically, you can install without issues. In practice, that may not be true. I'd recommend against blindly updating, especially if you've got the Seatbelt kext or the Voodoo kernel. Software update will probably nuke your system if those things are installed. From what I remember, iAtkos doesn't put it's things in the /Extra directory, which is more than slightly annoying when it comes time to update. This page has some good suggestions. I would add that you should also back up your Boot.plist and kernel, and possibly repair permissions. For future reference, it's a lot easier to update safely when you have your critical OSx86 kexts in the /Extra directory, along with the Voodoo kernel if you have it, since those things won't get hosed by the updater.

thanks for the reply, since I am still a noob at this I will leave it as is. I have a snow leopard CD, maybe I'll just install that instead. Can I use the same kexts that I'm using in Leopard for Snow Leopard? Also whats the best way to install snow leopard? I tried using a cd boot loader, then pop the snow leopard cd in, but it never worked. iAtkos was the only thing that worked for me.

Do you have a retail disk or an upgrade disk? You need a retail disk, not an upgrade or OEM (came with computer) to install SL on a PC. Unfortunately in many cases your kexts will not work in SL. If they do work, you will have to boot in 32-bit mode, which essentially wastes one of the most awesome features of the new OS. As for installing, it turns out you can just run the installer packages for SL from your Leopard installation. This is definitely the easiest and safest method, but it requires you have an extra hard drive or partition just for Snow Leopard. What you do is format the extra drive as Mac OS Extended, put in your SL disk, navigate to /Volumes/SL DISK NAME/System/Installation/Packages/ and open OSInstall.mpkg. Then you choose your newly formatted disk and GO! After it's installed, you can install Chameleon and whatever other patches you need before you even boot it up for the first time. This way, you can save your old Leopard install at least for a little while in case the SL is FUBARed.

well I followed that link you sent and updated to 10.5.8 without any issues! Now I'm using time machine to backup my comp, if I do install Snow Leopard and it goes wrong, can I boot from a dvd and backup my computer (back to leopard) from my time machine backup?

I honestly haven't tried (haven't been forced to), but I'd be surprised if you couldn't.

I tried to restore using time machine, wouldn't work, had to re-install everything, I'm guessing because it over wrote chameleon? I booted from the install cd, then went to time machine and choose a backup, and then after it reboot it didn't work, didn't show chamelon anymore. I'm going to try and install 10.6 instead using this writeup: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=184446

Huh. I'm sorry I wasn't able to advise you better. Thanks for the heads-up about Time Machine!

np, I have a question about snow leopard, can I update to 10.6.2? I'm using a vanilla install now since I used that guide. Does anyone have a write-up? I really don't wanna screw up this install as I finally got it all working.
