I have a laptop with a Dell 1490 wireless card. It works wonderfully in OS X and I'm wondering if I could make it work in my desktop with this adapter:

I'm just wondering if anyone's had any experience with something like this.

If not, can anyone recommend a good PCI/PCIe wireless card?

This method does work. Specifically, I am using this combination and it is a great way for using a mini PCI-e card within a desktop system. The DELL card works native in OSX (as airport) and in Windows and is wireless n.

For me, this way of tackling wifi is the best option and better than any USB solutions which always seem a bit of a compromise as they rely on extra drivers.
