I am going to upgrade my old desktop today. I'm getting a new motherboard, processor, and maybe a new graphics card. Are there any recommendations on what kinds I should get and stay away from. Such as a Gigabyte or MSI board. Intel or AMD and so on. Any input would be greatly appreciated before I leave.

your best bet is the wiki at wiki.osx86project.org choose how much you're going to spend and then find a motherboard and video card in that category that others have had success with.

ok,,,I come home with a new Gigabyte MB. The GA-MA78LM. I searched around for it but didnt see much so I thought I'd be the guinea pig. Has a 2.8Ghz AMD with it and ATI 3000 video i think. My only problem is I forgot and don't have a DVD reader for this machine. Can someone point me in the right direction to a guide where I can put Leopard on my 8GB USB stick and boot from it. I know it's not as simple as just copying over from the DVD. I've looked around but most I see are for windows. I know there is a certain way to set it up. Thanks.

out of curiosity, did you see matty or my post before you went shopping? did you look at the wiki? did you notice the total lack of amd?

it can be done, but you're putting yourself up for a world of hurt. at the very least you will need an amd kernel.

considering the modification that is necessary i think you need a working installation. you could use linux, but you may find it easier to install os x on vmware and build your installation from there on your boot drive.

Believe it or not,,but the shop I was at was out of all intel processors. Had only AMD left. I wasnt waiting for a few days and I wasn't going to pay through the nose at future shop either. I have SL booting along side vista on my Acer, but the graphics is the GMA 4500M which sucks bigtime. Plus my wife growls every time I leave SL logged in. She likes the doze. I will give this a try anyway and leave it dedicated for osx86.

secretly infect your windows installation with viruses that pop up porn at random. she'll love os x in no time.

if you have a working install you can follow any number of guides. basically, format hfs+ usb stick. install chameleon onto your usb stick. mount your snow leopard retail disc/iso. open /Volumes/SnowLeopardInstallDisc/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg and install to your usb stick.

then the fun begins with kernels and kexts. you'll have to scour the board for that stuff. good luck.

once working, you can repeat the process or just image your install onto a harddisk.
