nVidia 8600M freezing after 10.6.2 upgrade if HDMI monitor plugged in but not DVI

I'm really baffled by this, but here goes:

I don't have any weird kexts, and my system is very close to vanilla. I'm using PC-EFI 10.5 on an hp Pavilion dv9700t and it has an nVidia 8600M GS card with available HDMI port (for hooking up DVI or HDMI monitors).

I've been using the computer hooked up to my 60" Sony KDS-60A2000 TV via HDMI ever since 10.5 and all the way up to 10.6.1. Core/CL/QE/etc is all enabled and working fine.

I'm using <key>GraphicsEnabler</key><string>y</string> and it was running just fine under 10.6.1 and still is (sort of) under 10.6.2, however - here's the problem. If I boot up with the TV plugged in (HDMI), after the verbose boot-up, all I get is a black screen and the window server never appears. If I boot up without the TV (HDMI) plugged in, it boots fine. The moment I plug it in, however, the screen freezes - but - the computer itself doesn't freeze. Hard disk activity goes on, and you can still SSH into the machine.

Here's what's really weird: same thing happens if I hook in any HDMI monitor (not the TV, but a 24" Acer with real HDMI) but if I hook it up to another Acer monitor (22" with DVI and a DVI-HDMI cable) it DOESN'T FREEZE.

So, I hooked up to an LG DVI monitor - same deal, doesn't freeze.

Seems the problem only happens when I plug into a real HDMI monitor (one that supports audio).

Anyone else having this problem? Anyone find a solution? :(

Thanks!

I have the same problem with my 9800GTX , temporary I've unplugged my projector but still looking for a solution
also same issue on 8800GT. I also tried NVkush, but it didn't help. Some hints would be nice.

By the way, the people in the topic 10.6.2 doesn't work with 8800GT EFI strings are having a very similar (identical) issue...

So to clarify, this started happening for you both after upgrading to 10.6.2, but everything was fine for you on 10.6.1? I see you're both running desktops, so the fact that I'm on an hp laptop is seeming irrelevant if you're having the same issue and both of you have nVidia cards. Were you guys using GraphicsEnabler first before upgrading, or EFI strings, or DSDT mods, or nvinject/NVkush/etc?

The problem is the same with both EFI strings and DSDT mods, I've tested both.

Well, I was using DSDT mode (lifehacker version). After installing 10.6.2 I've tried GraphicsEnabler as well as NVkush. But none of them solved it.

Okay, well that seems to make it very clear. Now, do all of your monitors have HDMI, or DVI ports? Does it make a difference to anyone? Also, have people tried VGA? I'm about to try VGA on my laptop (has both HDMI and VGA ports) with my Acer P244W (the one I had a problem with via HDMI cable.

btw, hashmet, you double-posted; you have the option to delete it if you wish. :)

Yeah, you're right. But as long as both are open maybe someone could miss something!!!

Well, back to the topic: I've two DVI ports. On one of them hangs my 24" monitor. On the other port I've a DVI2HDMI adapter then a veeeeery long HDMI cable to my TV. Perhaps it's important to mention that I also tried only the HDMI port (that means I plugged off my monitor). But there was also a black screen on my TV. I could see the gray apple screen and than there was only darkness!!

Try the non-HDMI port, see how that works. I have a feeling this is very specifically HDMI related.

News flash:

I tried the VGA port with my Acer P244W (1920x1080 res) monitor over VGA -- NO FREEZE.

Runs perfectly at full res without any issue whatsoever. Freezes over HDMI-HDMI cable. Again, my DVI-D (DVI-HDMI cable) monitors do not cause the freeze, only HDMI-capable monitors with HDMI-HDMI cable cause the freeze (for me).

Well I do not understand it. What different makes a DVI-HDMI cable? If I got it right, two DVI Monitors do NOT cause a freeze, do they?

Well, I think it is very important to know if real macs have the same issue. By the way: Do all of you use Chameleon? Has anyone found anything else about this topic on the internet? Actually I didn't found anything.

Difference is, the problem only occurs for me on monitors with HDMI ports. On monitors with DVI ports, I didn't have this issue. Anyway, problem solved!!

Solution is to replace NVDAResman.kext and NVDANV50Hal.kext (6.0.6 versions) from 10.6.2 with 6.0.2 versions from 10.6.1. See here.

I tried this on my GA-EP45-UD3P 4GB Q9550 w/ Galaxy GTX250 512mb video system and the GUI came up but without resolution options beyond 1280x1024 and no QE/CI. I tried by repairing the permissions on the files as well, but it didn't change the effect.

Similar problem here:

8500GT

2 dvi ports no hdmi

Working situations

Both dvi ports work on 2 dvi monitors

1 dvi port on 1 dvi monitor & 1 dvi port to dvi-vga adapter to vga port on projector

1 dvi port to dvi-hdmi adapter to hdmi port on projector

Non working

1 dvi or dvi-vga to one monitor & one dvi port to dvi-hdmi adapter to hdmi port on projector (NEED THIS!)

I have 10.5.6: Is the above method safe? (can't ugrade without reinstall because of older modded boot disk)

I too have this problem. I replaced NVDAResman.kext and NVDANV50Hal.kext (6.0.6 versions) from 10.6.2 with 6.0.2 versions from 10.6.1 as suggested. I was able to boot into the system, but resolution is 800 x 600. I lost the option to select another resolution.

My video is configured with DSTS.aml and my card is 9800 GT 1G. Do I need to do something else?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
