Hi eveyone,

This is my first post on this forum so please be Gentle.

I am experiencing a great deal of pausing while selecting menus, closing windows, typing text in the terminal, attempting to play DVD's, MP3's, Divx. This identical slowdown has occurred since my fresh install of 10.4.6 (JaS). The patches I chose to install when setting up the OS included: Intel Base System, Intel SSE3, and the VIAATA Driver

Here are my system specs.

Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHz

ASRock 775VM800 Motherboard

- Northbridge: VIA P4M800

- Southbridge: VIA 8237R

CMedia CMI9761A Integrated Audio

VIA 6103 10/100 Ethernet

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (AGP)

Thus far everything seems to be working. I Have gotten CI/QE and Q2D working for my graphics card, and my chipset seems to be working with AppleVIAATA. I have disabled Beam Sync (Incredible performance increase). Yet still even after all these things and the system running incredibly better. I am still having pausing issues.

The only thing I have noticed is that when running the Activity Monitor and recreating the problem. I see the process "WindowServer" spike to about 30-40% CPU usage during the pause. It doesn't always spike that high, but usually it'll do something.

Have I possibly made a mistake? Or could it be something else. Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to give out as much information about my situation as I could.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing you mean the Calllisto driver? I already am running the Callisto driver. I don't think the video card is the problem. I have tried 3 different video cards including my motherboards onboard graphics and the problem still persists.

I think the problem is elsewhere.

Thanks for the reply Rammjet, I have already removed the TPMACPI kext, and tried the HWSensor as you suggested. Sadly the issue is still there. Basically it's hard to describe the problem. It's almost as though the system is pausing for a second or two inbetween pretty much every operation. Take the screensaver for example, it will run smooth for a second, then pause for a second, then smooth, then pause etc.

I know that the graphics support works well because XBench graphics tests are great, same with all the benchmarks really. They come out with strong numbers. I'm a bit at a loss.

This may seem like a stupid question, but during the install when you apply the patches. For a CPU with SSE3 do you only select SSE3? or do you select both SSE3 and SSE2, I only selected SSE3.

I have posted a video that demonstrates an example delay I'm speaking of.

Lol. tkamen: you might have shown in your video something other than the apple menu. If you're getting stuttering in the dock, like the bouncing isnt smooth, I have the same problem with my 805 (which everyone and their mother on here has basicly said is my imagination). If you set cpus=1 in com.apple.Boot.plist, it makes everything smooth.

Well, reading posts like this make me scared in buying an Athlon X2...

OT: I've also noticed that the shadow of your pointer follows it after 1 second delay, is that the cause of the so called "tearing"?

Edit: Have you tried putting "idlehalt=0" in your apple.com.boot.plist?

Does anyone know if Intel/AMD dual cores are even possible with the current OSX kernel?

Anyways, I'm happy with my X2 and I only use OSX as a test operating system anyways. I have noticed the stutter bug too, and will try adding the "cpus=1" to the boot config thanks  !

B.

Hey, I'm having a similar problem with a non-dual core CPU. Not exactly the same prob though. Instead, at times the computer just seems to lock. After about 30 seconds-a few minutes it starts moving again. This happens most often while booting, but not exclusively. It only started recently (a couple of weeks ago). At first I thought it was over-heating (the fan on my laptop doesn't turn on anymore? Anyone know if this is a hardware thing with the fan, or software with OS X? I don't know how it's controlled on celerons. I guess it could be either. I'll try booting to a linux live cd or something and see what happens.) but it's happened a few times while booting up after not being on for a while, so I don't know. Any ideas?
