I'm looking for an easy, retail install of SL on a good quality mATX form-factor MB (have a case I really like that won't hold a full sized ATX MB). Was looking at the Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2H as an example:

  • socket LGA 775
  • Northbridge Intel G41
  • Southbridge Intel ICH7
  • audio Realtek ALC888B
  • LAN Realtek 8110SC

All seems pretty std (?) Any pointers towards install guides for recent mATX MB's or general suggestions for such would be greatly appreciated ;)

Further research shows that the PCIe slot in this MB is only x4, not x16. So I've been steered towards the GA-G31M-ES2L by an experienced user in another forum. Rev. 2 of that board has an incompatible LAN chipset, so a separate NIC is req'd. I'm thinking of combining this with an Intel Core 2 Duo E7600 and an nVidia chipset video card.

What does everyone like these days for an nVidia card that might work well with a mATX MB like this ? Something at a good price/perf. point (i.e. not too expensive) ? I've seen a lot of 8400, 9400, 9500, and 9600 cards avail at Newegg, Directron, and the like...

Pointers to build guides featuring the GA-G31M-ES2L would also be much appreciated ;)

UPDATE: Ahhhh...the "search" function is your friend, I see :) But advice on a good nVidia card to go with this would still be welcome.

matching a vid card to your gigabyte board is unnecessary in my opinion. all gigabyte boards are often highly compatible, and matching a vid card to a mb wont help you install the drivers for it. this one you picked out will certainly work fine with iPC 10.5.6 install. Depending on the CPU you can probably use the vanilla kernel (no kernel selected) As for nvidia card, 9400 GT is one i see everywhere in the forums. in reality there is tons of support for GeForce 6x through 9x series. Find one you like most, then use this custom google search (searches popular hackintosh sites) and enter the model of your card you chose, you will get a hundred forum posts for support, instructions, links to drivers.

be sure to install OSX86 tools (in iPC install choices) you may need it for getting your nvidia card up and running

i got my old GeForce FX 5200 agp working in an old dell dimension. took me few weeks of learning about kext files and such but everyone needs to go through that process and will help you in the long run. i will be switching to ATI 3650 this week so I doubt I will have more info to offer you. good luck!

EDIT: so sorry, just realized you were asking about SL and not Leopard. ma bad
