LaFemme69
wondering if anyone can help me. i have 2 separate OS, leopard and vista, which are installed in 2 SEPARATE HDDs. I have HP Elite PC m9250f. Are there anyways i can: 1) dual boot 2) run vista (from the other HD) in OSx, with parallel, crossover, bootcamp....? without having to install vista through OSx HDD? thanx. kd Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/188087-2-os-with-2-separate-hdds/ Share on other sites
HansTelg36
this is what i did... Installed Chamelon 2, there are plenty of guides to help you... you can even use a distro cd... it will ask you whcih os to boot to.. it detects your partitions automatically in each drive and the gui is nice however if you are going to reinstall vista.. i would disconect temporalyty the OSX hard drive, as vista will write its own boot code ( if you have another partition that windows supports in the osx drive) this happend, but i fixed chamelon from my installer dvd, but destroyed my windows 7 install.. vilpostus
1 Yes, you can. Use any of bootloaders: EasyBCD, Grub, Lilo, Chameleon, Acronis OS Selector etc. 2 In linux it is possible to run Windows XP via VMWare player http://mazimi.wordpress.com/2007/06/24/vir...s-within-linux/ Don't rally sure about Mac OS X. I doubt it is possible. Even if it would, is is better to boot Windows directly anyway. LaFemme69
Thank you for your response. I did install Chamelon 2 (RC2 i believe) in OS X but i don't know how to configure it or set it up. When i boot up, it did flash a screen letting me choose either MAC or PC but when i choose PC, it couldn't boot and gave me an error. I cannot find the gui in OS X so i can configure or set up. i search every where for Chameleon guides but unsuccessful. kate d. this is what i did... I did look into EasyBCD & Acronis OS Selector but haven't installed yet coz i am not sure if i should install on Vista, OS X or both. Plus, all i read so far is for both OSs in partitions of SAME HDs but i have 2 SEPARATE HDs. will that work? thanx. katie d. 1 Yes, you can. vilpostus
Well it doesn't matter is it an external or internal even the same HDD. Bootlaoders support them all. Just need the right settings. In case of a separate HDD install it is advisable to use an external boot loader e.g. grub etc. I wander what type of an error you've got on booting Windows? What exactly is the massage? I guess if the OS X was installed after the Windows already existed on the same HDD, the MBR may become corrupted. If so, restore MBR using Windows install disk. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 then it should be bootable. vilpostus
By saying "External boot loader", I mean additional or optional bootloader, the one which comes with naiver of OSes. Something you need to install separately. Usually this is installed to the primary boot disk (the disk that is set to be the first to boot in BIOS). Then after some configuration, you can chose what OS to boot. razy60
If you realy want to install on 2 seperate hard drives then you need to open the case disconect 1 drive(un plug it), install either OS, check to see if it runs then un plug that drive plug in the other drive install the other OS on that, check to see if it works, Then when you restart your PC you should have an option at start up it will be something like F11/F12, click that it will then show you your 2 HDD's choose either 1 to start your OS. Remeber to power off and un plug the PC each time you plug in or unplug a drive.
