Well from what I've read there are several people here that have flavors of the sony sz laptop. Which in my opinion is the nicest laptop out there. Very lite, very powerful. I would have been happier, if they didn't dupe me on the 128MB video memory, but I will move on.

Sounds like the laptop is working well, except that audio, pcmcia, and wireless are not working.

Sounds like the intel video is working properly with hard accell? But the Nvidia is not?

My goal it to make this thing a dual boot for windows xp, and OSX running Final Cut Pro

Wireless would be nice, but I really need to get audio, and would like to get pcmcia support.

I am downloading 10.4.6Goatsecx Dvd

I have decent linux background and decent programming experience, but it's been a while since I've worked on linux drivers, since pitou(if any of you remember that). If someone can help me figure out what I need to do to get audio and pcmcia support I am will to do plenty of leg work.

Thanks..

joemx

p.s. If there's any update on compatibility this might be a good place to collect, and I will keep people posted of any progress with summary posts whenever there is a breakthrough

The best way to proceed is to figure out what chipsets the sony uses for audio and wireless and then search the forums for how people installed that chipset.

I believe the sony sz series uses the intel 3945abg for wireless and a sigmatel chipset for HD audio.

The intel 3945 is not supported by OS X, so you can either swap it out with the atheros AR5006EX (which is supported) or buy a supported USB wireless adapter. See this thread for more info: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=13522

I replaced my intel 3945 with the atheros card and it works great in OS X. The atheros has much better reception too, so you may want to do it anyway (even if you only use Windows).

I don't think there is good support for sigmatel audio right now in OS X, but if your model is supported, it should be detected by AudioHDA.kext. Find out your vendor and device IDs (from Windows Device Manager) for your audio card. You may have to add them to the list in AudioHDA.kext.

For audio

Device Instance ID is

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7661&SUBSYS_104D0700&REV_1042\4&782A47B&0&0001

Hardware Ids are

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7661&SUBSYS_104D0700&REV_1042

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7661&SUBSYS_104D0700

Compatible Ids

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7661&REV_1042

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7661

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01

For PCMCIA

PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8039&SUBSYS_81E6104D&REV_00\4&6B16D5B&0&20F0

HW Ids

PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8039&SUBSYS_81E6104D&REV_00

PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8039&SUBSYS_81E6104D

PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8039&CC_060700

PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8039&CC_0607

Compatible Ids

PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8039&REV_00

PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8039

PCI\VEN_104C&CC_060700

PCI\VEN_104C&CC_0607

PCI\VEN_104C

PCI\CC_060700

PCI\CC_0607

What can I do with these numbers? Is there a lookup somewhere? Do the compatible ids help..

Thanks..

I believe that device id corresponds to the Sigmatel STAC9225 audio chip. Some people have gotten the sigmatel 9220 and 9223 working, but not the 9225 (that I know of). The solution is complex and involves replacing codecIDs in the Info.plist file in AudioHDA.kext with the one for your model (2206496353) and modifying the pin layout.

I would recommend starting a new thread asking for help in configuring the Sigmatel STAC9225 and also reading through these threads:

http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=15817

http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=11202

Warning: It's not going to be easy or even possible to get audio working with this chipset.

I too would love somebody to solve the STAC9225 problem.

By the way, you might want to expand the Vaio unite thing to FE series users: we have the same wireless, NVidia Go 7400 (same?), same audio cards...

But ethernet networking here works fine. Required a small Info.plist edit, but I documented that in the wiki.

Hi! Guys!

I have a SONY SZ, and same problem like joemx's SZ.I have change the Wireless Module before,I Try 2 of atheros AR5006EX wireless moudle,First moudle is Made by IBM,and can't work on Windows(anyway thanks vinayp give PCD Drivers to me), Second Moudle is made by Apple(Same as Macbook Pro),this Module works well on OS X,But can't start on Windows(even use Apple boot camp drivers),and this module will make OS X restart fail...

Edit on 6/14/2006:I was try a MacBook Pro Wireless Module today ,It's works great on both OS X & WinXP,and I find out the "Second Moudle is made by Apple" before,is an engineer sample(not for sale) :censored2:,sorry about my mistake before.

Getting everything to work (including sound!)

Hi I am new user that just got a sony vaio sz220. i have searched for a couple of days and found scattered information on making osx86 work on the sz series. i'm not

that good with macs so i need some help! Please help me put together a complete and detailed list of steps so anyone can enjoy osx on their sweet vaio sz.

I put together a list of all the steps that need to be done, please let me know if anything is incorrect as I am going to try and install everything this weekend!

get osx 10.4.7

get JaS 10.4.8 Update (http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/597215/3876110/)

patch and burn iso

install with Intel Support, 10.4.4 login window, and GMA950 <- not sure if this is right (not sure how this works or if i need to do the patching before burning the 10.4.7 iso, please help)

get Power management from http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=14912

install (will this increase the battery life, i heard the vaio sz will only last 1 hour with osx86 running, is this true!???)

video: nVidia GeForce Go 7400, macvidia drivers version 1.0.8 manual install, reboot and that's it. (i can manage this one!)

video: Intel GMA950 Video works. CI & QE are supported with JAS GMA950 patch (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=37213 <-- i think this site describes how to do the patch). In the Sony Vaio BIOS, set the laptop display area to extend the screen to get 1280x800 resolution in OS X. Otherwise your maximum resolution will be 1024x768. (should be taken care of if i did the update correct i guess)

ethernet: follow instructions on http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=28680

USB: Works natively

touchpad: add some touchpad support using this link (scrolling) http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...amp;#entry54090

wireless: buy usb wireless adpater

Any steps I left out? How long will this all take? Anything I need to do before installing 10.4.7? Can all the patching can be done after the os is installed?

OMG I'm pulling my hair our here! I have a sony sz340P. I used a full install of jas 10.4.8 selected the following:

-intel kext

-login window fix

-GMA950

I'm a little confused on GMA950 versus the nvidia 7400go card. That aside, I understand that I need to use GMA 950 so that I can get the higher resolutuions (I have already set "stretch" in the bios). Right now I did the mod to get the on-board network card up and running. But the system insists on using the nvidia card not GMA 950. How did you guys get the higher resolutions running?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have nearly everything on my Sony VGN-SZ120P working perfectly in OSX 10.4.8 thanks to all the helpful people here. I have updated the 10.4.8 HCL Portables List with all my experiences. A few notes:

1. No WiFi support. I have ordered a Dell 1390 mini PCIe for $14 on eBay. Figured it was worth a shot.

2. No touchpad scrolling. I know there's a hack, but based on some peoples' experiences, I don't want to risk hosing my load up.

3. No support for the laptop's LCD screen with the GeForce Go 7400.

4. OSX is now the default OS, as I have to press F8 to access XP. No big deal.

I'll let you guys know how the new wifi card works out when it comes in.

1- Audio: I tried the Taurga patcher but the system hangs whenever I try to patch the codec file !

2- Video: Intel card works fine out the box with 1280 x 800 x 32 resolution, but there is No brighteners control or slider. how to get it so I can save on my battery power.

3- Cam: built-in cam is not working, any idea what I need to do to get it working?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-N110G. Not the exact same as you guys but I have found a few things that may come in handy :)

I too have a Sony SZ220. I installed Jas 10.4.8 a few days ago. I am pretty happy with the setup. I haven't got dual booting to work with Vista ( I had it working with 10.4.6 goatsec). But I will work on that later. What I really want to get working is the sound card. Since I do not have Vista loaded right now, I don't have a way of getting device info. But some posted the info above so that info should work. Could anyone walk me through getting this to work. I understand a lot of computer stuff, but I have always been a windows guy. I don't understand editing kext files and kernals and the like.

Has anyone with a SZ tried running 10.4.10? I have it running nicely with the exception of the friggin ethernet not working... the method (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=28680) worked fine for 10.4.9, but not for 10.4.10.

Does anyone have ethernet running on 10.4.10?

I have an SZ4XWN/C and have managed to install a perfectly working dual boot OSX/Vista build. (with exception of internal wireless and Nvidia).

I used the XxX 10.4.11 DVD image and even the built in web cam works! I tried 2 previous images (brazil mac and jas), both worked but the XxX was the best fit for my SZ hence I can recommend this release to any SZ4 user (and it installs OSX 10.4.11 so I can use my iphone with it too).

I had to play around with the sound driver using Taruga`s HDAPatch, I have posted a message on that board if you want more info on how I did that.

Still not got the Nvidia GO 7400 card working so will be interested if anyone has found a driver that this works with!!
