Hi all:

I don't have Blu Ray sources, only DVD and .avi.

Is it possible to encode DVDs (VIDEO.TS files) into 720p or 1080p?

If so, which Apps should I be looking for? I already have Handbrake and ffmpegx. I'm wondering where I can find some good tutorials.

Would it be better to output to 720p or 1080p for DVD sources?

Any advice or tips?

Much appreciated.

Though you might be able to upconvert a DVD (480i), I am not sure why you would want to do so (or how to do so, for that matter). A 1080/720 video file created from an inferior source isn't going to provide any more fidelity and will create giant files.

If you have computing power to spare, I recommend playing with handbrake and fine tuning x264 settings for high quality, low data footprint files (480p after deinterlacing).

I agree.

Absolutely no point in software up-converting SD to HD. Any additional unnecessary transcoding will just degrade the picture quality.

All the up-convert process does is interpolate (fill in the gaps.) from the data already available. i.e. making 480 (SD DV NTSC) or 576 (DS DV PAL) lines into 1080 or 720 by guessing!

Professional standards converters cost several hundred thousand $ and will still degrade picture quality. A software converter like MPEGStreamClip is good but still not a patch on the real thing.

If you are playing and avi, mpeg, mov to an HD monitor or TV from a PC your GFX card will already up-convert the video to whichever resolution you have set the monitor to. The GFX card will do a very acceptable real-time conversion!

If you are viewing on a progressive scan monitor (all PC monitors are progressive.) you may get some benefit from converting from 480i or 576i to 480p or 576p. However media players such as VLC have a very good deinterlace option built in. (select linear deinterlace.) This will remove the bearding or interlacing effect you see most obviously on a hard vertical edge. Be aware a lot of standard def DVD's are already progressive scan!

Keep it native - if you have to transcode anything or copy any DVD's keep it full bandwidth, don't reduce the data rate.
