Hello all, I'm planning on building a PC, and I'm trying to make it as compatible as possible with OSx86, and also just trying to get everthing compatible together itself. I've never selected and put together my own computer, and before I get to ordering it, I'd like to know how compatible everything is together, and how compatible it will be with OSx86, and anything that anyone can suggest is better to get, add, or replace with what I already have. I've selected everything off of Vibe Computers. Here's what I have so far:

MoBo:

CPU:

RAM:

HDD:

Case:

I already have a DVD drive, so I'm alright in that area, and I currently a 160GB IDE drive that I'm wondering will be compatible with OSx86 on this set up. I'm trying to keep it relatively cheap, as I don't have all that much to spend. Also, I'm in Canada, so NewEgg isn't an option. Any help is greatly appreciated.

That is a 945P chipset motherboard and currently you haven't got graphics...

The processor is fine but you should consider a 920 as it is not that much more expensive, runs cooler and has twice the cache. PC5300 memory shouldn't be all that much expensive if you buy ValueRam from Kingston as well...

So here is my advice

1- Buy the p5ld2-vm as it has o/b graphics compatible with OSX : GMA950 sucks but works

2- Better RAM, DDR2-667

3- 920 instead of 805 if you can afford it

exactly, the 805@anything above 3.5 GHz should draw more than 150W alone... Tomshardware's 805@4.1 consumed more than 200W which screams for decent watercooling... They're just plain stupid for saying 4.1 for 125$ which is a lie considering you should be paying around 200$ for decent watercooling anyway, they just happen to have one but what about regular users? Does anyone just happen to have a watercooling setup lying around, sure not. Just buy the 920 for 190$ and oc it to 3.7+ with stock cooling and voltage as these 65nm parts are much superior to 90nm parts concerning performance/watt ratios. Where I live there's around 60-70$ difference between the prices of the two processors maybe it's different in other parts of the globe So it's up to you, 805 is still a much better choice than Intel's single core Pentium or Celeron lineup for that matter.

What about the 930 at 3GHz, it is also 65nm, and is also a bit cheaper, I'm not seeing why though. I'll probably be going for the 920 now, as I don't really want to dish out the extra for the PSU and liquidcooling if I were to overclock the 805, but I would like to know the difference between the 920 and the 930.

maybe you should e-mail the online retailer and ask which stepping(s) they have and if you could get one with a c1 stepping? in germany most decent online retailers for enthusiasts show the code of the cpu and sometimes they charge 1-2€s more for a better patch but then you know you get the better patch (better ocing, cooler etc...). Local dealer is the guaranteed way.

btw the prices on that site is CAD right? Also for a good price/performance ratio a 400W Antec should do fine for case+psu... Sonata 450W perhaps?

In the HCL for 10.4.5 it says that the ITE IDE controller isn't supported in OS X for the Asus P5LD2-VM, but would I be able to use and IDE HDD for Windows, and SATA for OS X? Or is there another MotherBoard that would be preferably chosen that is fully supported and uses an LGA775 socket?

I'm going for the Intel GMA 950 onboard graphics, so I don't have to buy a GPU, and I'm not up for even bothering with buying everything extra to overclock the 805.

EDIT: Is there a good Intel board that is reccommended, that is working 100% with no, or a few patches?

the 975 gos flawless and for the cooling is like $30.00 per all

Ok, this should be my final two questions for this thread:

1. I'm wondering if the 350W PSU will be sufficient to run this set up, not a reccomendation for a case/psu, just need to know if it will be sufficient, and I likely won't be doing any overclocking.

2. Is it possible to use both a HDD, and an Optical Drive on the same PATA connector, or no, because I need to know how big of a SATA drive to get if I cannot do this, as I currently have a 160GB IDE that I would like to get some more use out of.

Thanks for all the help.

1. for overcloking says is ok the 500w, if not with the 350w.

2. U have to try and let us know .. :D

Good luck

Well, I tried it out, by removing my slave optical drive and replacing it with my slave hard drive, and plugged everything back in, booted up, and I couldn't get past BIOS, or get into BIOS settings, so I rechecked everything to make sure it was hooked up properly, and tried again, same result. So just to make absolute sure, I called up Maxtor, and they said, no it would not be possible to do. So I guess question answered. Thanks by the way for the PSU information.
