I have been rummaging through here a bunch, choosing parts for a new build... I plan to do a decent bit of gaming, so I'm looking at a pretty good graphics card.

I am between an ATI 4890 1GB and a nVidia GTX 275

I know there is a price deference between the two, other than that, is one company's cards 'better' supported than the others? From what I read, all seems pretty even.

That's a good question, for which there are many answers. Make up your mind:

ATI:

Far cheaper

More efficient on load (better as a gaming rig)

Hotter and/or noisier

But Sapphire Vapor-Xs are nearly silent (except HD 4890 series)

HD 4890's huge OC capability

Many models from 512MB up to 2GB (useful for GTA IV and 30" displays)

Less compatible with OS X (No Vesa Mode, poor drivers) and trickier to install

Nvdia:

More expensive and confusing name rebranding

More efficient on idle mode* (better for casual gaming rigs)

Cooler and more silent

Cuda compatible and better drivers both for OS X and Windows

More compatible with OS X (Vesa Mode) and easier to install

* An average GTX 275 sucks 30-40 less Watts than a HD 4890 on idle.

A very complete roundup of HD 4890 Vs. GTX 275 (including OC models):

The price isn't that different anymore between the 4890 and GTX 275. The 275 will be much easier to get working from what I understand.

MSI GTX 275: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814127429

XFX is a better brand.

Thanks! Price wasn't really what I was all that concerned about. I kinda was leaning towards the ATI because I really want to support AMD and I have been fuming at the walls with these infernal (LITERALLY!) nVidia chips in my MacBook Pro and don't much want to 'reward' them with continued business. But really, it comes down to which one works better...

Nvidia works better on hackintoshes, period. For warranty concerns, just buy brands with great support, like EVGA or XFX. I don't know about MSI's, but from what I've read everywhere in roundups and comments from Newegg, their "Twin Frozr" cards are premium quality and I'm gonna get a GTX 275 soon…
