It used to be that you could downgrade from a SuperDrive to a Combo Drive directly from the Apple Store. Now it seems like you're locked into the SuperDrive unless you get the 1.5 Ghz (core solo) mini or the 1.83 GHz MacBook. Two systems for those that don't need/want DVD burning with no way to downgrade the faster models. grumble grumble

Of course, this same rant can be applied to everything from "Now everyone needs a 20 inch iMac" to "Now everyone needs a G5 Quad"

I don't think "downgrading" quite works to their benefit... maybe thats why?

(I'm a laptop dude) but I don't like the fact that someone can get essentially the same things as my 15" MBP for 1k less... I'd simply like to more variations between the models; similiarly to when it was 15" G4 powerbook vs. the G3 iBook...

Like

Low-End 13", 15", 17"

Med 13", 15",17"

Top-End 13", 15", 17"

Same thing with the iMac, low, med and high.

this might seem outrageous but its the same thing... VERY few people need a 2.0 dual core processor, 100G HD etc.

If I want to buy a cheap laptop for a niece, I don't want to have to buy the practically top of the line w/ only 13" of display. My older 1GHz G4 w/ 1G of RAM is perfectly sufficient (I just gave it to her). Hell, she thinks it's blitzing fast compared to the family PC.
