- Doogie
I was just curious.. My buddy has a laptop that is an athlon 1.2 with 128mb of ram.... I was wondering how low some of you have went with this.. Its it painsteakingly slow? Unstable? I have seen a few rigs around a GHz but dont really know if there is any slower.. Sitting at 3.4GHz here... - Doogie
Interesting.. Is there some kind of limit built into the operating system that allows that minimum speed? Technobob
As long as the CPU supports SSE2 & PAE it will work and the speed is not an issue it will run. The old G3 iMac's are less then 1GHZ and run OSX just fine I don't think the old Athlon's have SSE2 but I'm not a AMD fan and don't know much about them. aquanutz
As far as I know, the Athlons don'e support see2/3. Only the AMD 64's and newer Semprons. Am I mistaken? - Doogie
Its pretty interesting that its just limited to the instruction sets availible from the CPU.. But seeing as OS X is really only designed to run on a special, not so broad range hardware set it really does make sense Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/17446-slowest-pc-with-os-x/#findComment-112975 Share on other sites
Hagar
My own experimentation has shown that a celeron 1.7 w/ 256mb ram is a perfectly usable machine, although (obviously) slow. With an old WD 10gb harddrive it xbench's at 14-17 ish...
