themacmeister
STOP PRESS: Restart/Shutdown/Sleep working 100% - not sure about safe sleep?! Only real glitch is sound volume losing approx 15% on shutdown/restart/wake - not cumulative, just reduced from full volume I finally got my system working perfectly last night - Asus M2N68-CM Motherboard, Athlon64x2 6000 CPU, 4GB RAM, 160GB SATA HDD + 500GB SATA HDD + SATA DVD-RW, 512MB PCIe GeForce 9800GT. Score of 130 in XBench - well below 170 attained on slower E7200 2.53GHz Core2Duo. Intel CPU beats AMD in all categories Requirements: iDeneb 1.4 (10.5.6) DVD nVidia Universal Installer.pkg VoodooHDA.kext.zip nForceLAN_0.62.13.kext.zip OpenHaltRestart_1.0.3.kext.zip - included on iDeneb DVD I copied shutdownfix.pkg from my iPC 10.5.6 DVD. You should find it by searching for one_core.c on the forum. 1. Make sure you are not using any IDE/ATA drives. 2. Change SATA mode in BIOS to AHCI - IMPORTANT!!! 3. Enable Legacy USB in BIOS too, if not already selected (otherwise you may have no mouse/keyboard on boot). 4. Boot with DVD, hit F8 at prompt and type: cpus=1 maxmem=3072 temporary 5. Use Disk Utility to format SATA HDD as GUID partition 6. Install with Voodoo Kernel, SMBIOS for your RAM speed, Seatbel kext fix, MCP67 chipset, OpenHaltRestart Fix, and all Apps. 7. Reboot, boot with -f -v flags. Enter info, then install nVidia Universal Installer - select Kexts Only! 8. Do not restart - force quit installer, and copy NVdarwinXXX.pkg from the iDeneb DVD with Terminal (cp -R /Volumes/iDeneb\ 1.4/System/Installer/Packages/Patch/Video/Nvidia/NVdarwin512.pkg) 9. Install NVdarwinXXX.pkg 8. Do not restart - force quit installers, and run OSX86Tools in /Applications/iDeneb Apps. Create an EFI Graphics string for a custom card (to match yours), copy and paste the hex string (the LONG number), and paste into the pre-existing <key>graphics=properties</key> section of com.apple.Boot.plist. 9a. Install OpenHaltRestart.kext using KextHelper. 9b. Install shutdownfix.pkg 10a. Restart and boot with -s -v flags. Mount your boot partition with /sbin/mount -uw / 10b. Remove /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext 11. Edit GeForce.kext, NVDANVx0.kext (to match your cards type - I use NVDANV50.kext for 9800GT), NVdarwin.kext by replacing entire list with just your cards model/vendor ID (in my case = 0x060510de). nothing more. Fix permissions with: chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/Cache/* touch /System/Library/Extensions Restart and you should have full res/QE/CI/GL support. I have tried with 20+ different kext packages for nVidia support, and this is the ONLY ONE that worked for me!! 12. Use KextHelper to install remaining two kexts. After restarting, you will need to launch /Applications/Audio & Midi Setup, and change all outputs/inputs to 44.1KHz and 16bit. You will then have full stereo out and stereo in. You may need to remove the existing network connection (you will be able to do this after creating a new connection with newly identified card). 13. Once you are happy with your setup, you need to disable Legacy USB in the BIOS, this will get all USB functionality working, although you will not be able to type in boot flags, so you may want to edit /Library/Preferences/System\ Preferences/com.apple.Boot.plist with appropriate kernel flags before continuing. That's it - start installing software like crazy - some Intel specific apps (Temperature Monitor and Parallels Desktop) will not run due to the missing hardware. VirtualBox will easily replace Parallels, and supports AMD NX extensions (WOOT). I am getting 178 153 in XBench (without disk), which is OK - this system seems to be 100% compatible, unlike my previous Intel E7200 model; Overflow, Parallels, MameOSX, GLQuake & PopCap games all run perfectly now - unlike before. I have been installing offline, so have not checked the ethernet connection, although it looks like it is working correctly. More news on this shortly. Should be able to test this fully on 13/7/09 - or 3 days from the date of this edit. The only thing stopping this from being PERFECT PERFECT, is a long lag during boot, after which a message appears regarding not being able to write some kernel symbols. Probably about 15-20 seconds. Apart from that, I am very happy indeed. VLC 1.00rcX has replaced MPlayerOSX-Extended as my favourite movie player too - as it is fast, fast, fast and rock solid stable. Things left to test: Network - before and after sleep DVD-Burning - should be fine Working perfectly - CD & DVD both fine at fast/slow speeds. Printing - should be fine Working perfectly - even after sleep Mic in/Line in - should be fine The system boots in SATA mode SATA, but falls over shortly after the Desktop appears. No "true" dual-boot I'm afraid, although you can dual boot with a single trip to the BIOS between sessions. themacmeister
STOP PRESS: I managed to ruin something, and had to revert to 10.5.6. Everything is working perfectly, including sleep and shutdown/restart. Hibernate does not seem to work? It should work if I can ever find the Hibernate preference panel I once had. I think I will stick with 10.5.6 for a while, as it is fantastic.
