I now have my new laptop triple booting. OS X, Linux (gentoo), and Windows XP pro.

The laptop is ATI based:

motherboard: ATI RX480M, SB450 chipset

video: ATI x1600 pci-e 256meg

ram: 2gig PC3200 400mhz DDR (corsair)

cpu: Amd Turion64 mt-40

wireless: Intel PRO2915 ABG MiniPCI

ethernet: Realtek 8168

sound: Realtek HD Ac97

monitor: 15.4 WXGA 1280x800

So I love my new laptop but of course there are problems. Wireless and built-in ethernet are both unsupported. Sound is also not supported.

The video works pretty good. It supports QE and CI by default, I didnt have to hack any of that to get it working. But it does have artifacts when I move the mouse (not always.)

Now to see what I can do about helping get drivers for the lan/wlan/sound.

So how about I document it all.

Install went fine, used the amd base and sse3 options (10.4.6 JaS dvd.)

DVD drive solved. I replaced my ATA driver with this one:

I used the instructions from here:

That got my hard drive into udma mode (running nice and fast) and it got my DVD drive fully working.

Get your audio ids and edit the AppleAzalia kext (many other posts describe this.)

With that all done I have good video, good sound and working dvd burning.

I got an Atheros based wifi card (mini pci) to replace the intel one, then got the IO80211 kext from the 10.4.5 update and replaced the one from 10.4.6. I edited the id for my card into the Atheros kext and airport was up and working (of course after rebulding the kext cache and repairing permissions.)

This is about half an hours worth of work once I know how to do it.
