I have built my own Hackintosh on a E6750, Asus P5N-D, Radeon 4870 and 4GB of RAM. Apart from some crashes in WoW and the occasional failure to reboot it works ok. Of course I have to use non-official patches because retail just wouldn't install for me :(

If I were to get hardware closer to Mac specs and use retail, would OSX then be stable enough for me to recommend to making them for my friends? Would the patches work ok and normal Mac software install without a hitch?

I would build more to test, but I don't have much money atm :(

I would never recommend a Hackintosh to anyone non computer literate.

Who knows what Apple could send out over software update that may stop the PC working. It doesn't matter whether you used a retail install or not, if a firmware update changes the EFI in a genuine Mac, then a software update is sent, the result could be one bricked hack and you have to fix it.

If you want a beginner to run OS X (and I agree that it is ideal for beginners and power users alike) then I would suggest a MacBook or a Mac Mini. That way Apple can handle the support via AppleCare.

Otherwise, stick to Windows, which most other places can support.

Is ethernet working OK on your P5N-D? I can't get it to not drop connection :angry2:

Brother have GA-EP35-DS3R and installed retail 10.5.2 and upgraded to 10.5.7 and had no single KP or connection drop

Yes LAN works. I think I used the driver in this thread:

Apple does not do auto firmware updates from software updates.

They do break OSX by putting new kexts over your hacked ones though. Can fix that by using /Extra folder to put kexts in the right place.
